My second life as a rl female playing a male avatar

The flawed assumption is that there is "something men want" girls have so much variety in what they want that if they see another girl wearing one of their outfits they are likely to never wear it again. Why assume with guys you can make some magic outfit "men want"?

I wanted to see what it would be like to play a male so here's how it went.

Heh, I do this time to time on a male alt.

I'm about as interested in flirting as a male as I am in flirting as a female, which is to say, not at all. But I am interested in noticing how it "feels" different to portray one rather than the other, and how people might react to me differently.

Case in point: There's one player I know who is rather misogynist. I approached him in two alts unknown to him, one male and one female. The difference in the way he treated each alt was night and day. Very enlightening. (And I've avoided him since)

If you really want to see how male/female gets different treatment, try taking each to a Gor sim. ;)

Fade: I know you love clothes and even admitted to gettting a female avie to shop, heh. I guess I haven't heard enough men bitch about this, if the shoe were on the other virtual foot, women would complain non-stop! And there are many men who just want a good pair of jeans and a ponytail which is what designers find a bit confusing, who to cater to, Fade the maven or Joe who lives in old jeans and a t-shirt?

Jon: that was kind of my point about having more men design, there would be a wider range of clothing to choose from.

That is so true. Of course you'll get 50 different answers from guys, you probably would from women too though. That's the thing, it's not like the 40s or something where guys always wore suits. We want the same kind of diversity women enjoy. Most of the stuff I see seems to suffer from the assumption you pointed out, it's like a generic notion of male fashion.

God I love that word 'maven'! Just sounds good. +5 for that.

The answer I guess, is all of us. If more designers turned their hand to it, diversity would just happen as each designer followed their instincts and influences.

But me, me! Please someone cater to me!

I truly hate men who have big ego's.

They should realise that the avarage relationship in SL doesn't last that long , so it's all temporary.

Those are just the rl females pretending to act like males. We real males are much nicer.

Everything I make in SL is something I would wear in RL, so it's not hard for me to come up with ideas for women's clothing, I can't do the same thing for menswears, so all I hear is guys saying "There is nothing good for men" and not elaborating. Fade you have helped somewhat, but I can't visualize a style that isn't within my experience, got a link with pictures maybe?

No, but...

Think Sean Connery, Don Johnson, Michael Douglas, Steve Martin, Martin Sheen, or even *gasp* Mel Gibson.

For younger types, just do those guys again, only when they were younger.

IM me in world if you want me to model or test out anything 8-)

Well, I'm still in the process of learning to make clothing, quality clothing I hope, so maybe instead of my plan to make women's stuff I will open the Male Maven Mall. :)

It would be more of a challenge, and who knows if it would work, but it is one area that isn't saturated, that's for sure.

I also think... maybe this is a shopping skill problem. I am a descriminating shopper and will do quite a bit of it before making a purchase. And like most things, the majority will be crap, you have to be determined when you shop. Are men willing to spend the time necessary to search out what is there already? Have good designers gotten the support from men they deserve? Honest question, because I don't know.

I logged in as my husbands AV so that I could shop for him and change his AV's look (heaven knows he won't).

While I was doing this was was approached by various people and chatted. I felt weird - particularly when a girl AV hit on him and yes, that did happen. I explained right away that I was a female behind the AV and explained what I was doing.

I felt weird talking to guys, like I was going to miss some guy code or something and they were going to KNOW I was not a guy. :o

I am just not the type who can pull off not being who I am. :p

Maeve, I'll dig some up for you later when I'm not head-in-a-prim. I might post some, but if I get a few I'll send them to you personally on a notecard as well.

Here here. Although I agree with Fade that there are certain modern styles that are under represented and played out styles that are overrepresented (like slicked back ponytails).

Cater to Fade and myself who WANT to spend money on new clothes and change our clothes every day, as opposed to the ponytail/jeans guy who won't spend money cause he never changes is look!

I suggest designers that want to tap the male market "adopt" a fashion concious male for ideas. Interview a few and find one that already has a style you like and let him feed you pictures/ideas. You have at least 2 possible male consultants here: Fade, and myself :)

As a designer that designs both for men and women, i definately know that guys DO like to shop. My best seller is currently a male set wich i'm decently proud about and i plan to expand soon.
I mostly design for myself: when i design for guys i do what i want to wear myself, while when i design for girls, i do what i'd personally like to see on them. Where's the problem? Well, sometimes i find girls much more inspiring that my old crappy self, so it's easier for me to get new ideas in that field...

Another point is that, while liking shop, guys tend to be very selective about what they buy and wear, and many (not all) tend to find a single style that fits them and to stick to it, disregarding the rest (i, for instance, tend to go with suits, even while feeling the unmistakable urge to put some more variation in my own personal and designing style), and that's another reason why many designers find the male market a bit intimidating.

That was the kind of info I was curious about. How guys shop, when they do. Do they find one place they like, stick to it and not shop around much? Would a shop that had a wide range of styles be more attractive than one that had mainly suits or casual, for instance? I know that seems to be obvious, but you said you stick to suits, if you were in a shop buying suits you liked, would you be tempted to expand your wardrobe if other nice clothing were right there?

Fade: be careful of alts, they will drain you of all your money and time if you let them, little buggers.

It really depends, actually i've always been tempted to expand my designing style even more than my shopping style. I just never get to it. Looks like I (as many males, even if i know some that aren't like that) get fond of my own image and style and tend to stick to it. I did try some variation so far (even if it was mostly themed stuff, like the scottish set or the racing suit) but i definately would like to move to other styles as well, it's just a matter of finding the right inspiration at the right time.
As for shopping it's probably the same thing. I noticed, both in RL and SL; that guys tend to be more focused while shopping. While girls sometimes go out just to "shop" without anything really detailed in mind, guys already know what they want before stepping out of the door. Go there, buy that, and then go back home. Of course it's more than possible to get sidetracked on the way. But as i said about inspiration, it's all a matter of seeing something unusual that we like in the right place at the right time. A combination that sometimes is hard to achieve.

Yeah, with men in RL and I guess SL too, shopping is a means to an end, it's about the mission not the journey. :)

Probably a mall with nothing but mens clothing/hair/skin designers would be a good idea, given that. I've only seen one in SL, although it was more of a very large store with many designers than a mall with different shops, though.
