Where else can you build a house, build the furniture, use it for a few months, tear it down and build a totally new house with totally new furniture without having to resort to international bank fraud???

Seconded. :)

I don't see why people make homes on this. Can someone elaborate why they make homes?

People do becuase they can. This does not mean you have to. There is a notion put forth by some folks to enjoy SL you must own land. Many folks including myself enjoy Second Life and do not have a house. To each thier own everyone plays the game thier way.

If you have to ask this, I'm not sure SL is for you. Maybe a FPS or MMORPG is more your style?

Male bovine organic by product comes to mind when I read that.

Even folks who don't have a "home" as such still like to have a place that's "theirs". I don't go too much in for playing Sims in SL with furniture and such, but I still keep places that are MINE ALL MINE.

Some time back I posted a question on the product design site I frequent asking for CD Storage recommendations (even though I've designed some that found their way to production). Sounds off topic to this thread, but I realized something during the exchange with some other designeres. Here's my post after the light went on:

From: someone
Couple comments resonated w me.

"Can't believe even designers fall for these useless CD "towers" and similar clutter junk with zero added value."

and

"Only draw back is you cant take up a whole wall with little shiny coloured boxes."

Condescending imo. Worse. I had the same attitude. Sadly took me a few days to figure out what was wrong.

Those things sell. Not just a few. A lot. Yet I've always viewed them as "useless" and cheap. Just like those comments. A product for the indiscriminant masses. Had to go back a ways to realize something.

I dont think people buy these towers for storage. Not really. These are social objects. How often you go to a party. Someone you kind of know hosting. Music is playing. And the selection is their CD tower collection. Out in the open. And looking at the selection an opinion of the owner is formed. That's happened to me. I've done that. Think i know someone and their taste, then see music that doesn't match expectation. And i'm betting it happens alot.

People want to show their musical taste. Just like they wear sports logos. This isn't about cheap CD storage. It's about identity. Exposing their musical taste to say something about themselves. Sad to say that never occurred to me before. So thanks for those comments even though they probably weren't well-intentioned. Still dont want a tower. But my attitude about those who buy them is gone. I never should have felt that way. And sorry I did.

Homes in SL are just like those CD Towers. Just like the expensive car or the latest fashion. They're (virtual) social objects. They tell people something about us. And that is the point of quite a lot in everyone's lives, isn't it?

A lot of people are in SL for the concept of escapism. They want to have a goal, and accomplish something. Having a home may not have a point directly, but there's a feeling of satisfaction and warmth to having your own virtual space to live in. I personally don't have a home in SL, don't really buy clothes or AV stuff.. but I can see how people would want to do that for themselves. there's not really a point, but thats the point

I've made all my homes, there is no need for it at all... I just like looking at pretty things, I like looking at them when I log in.. I like perfecting them.. I could care less if the ppl were pretty around me, its the back drop i like.. ;)

Whether you find a home necessary has more to do with whether you inhabit or control your avatar. Those who control their avatar--who simply see it as a tool to be used to "do things" within the "software" are quite different form those who inhabit their avatar and experience "game" events in a sentient way. I am in the latter category. I absolutely despised dressing and undressing in public places, even if they were remote or hidden allies. Constantly searching for "some place" to hang out was a tiresome chore. I need time to decompress, to sit in a space that I have arranged, to lay on my own couch and sulk when the mood strikes. I need to tear off my clothes, put my up hair, and slip into comfy pajamas at the end of the day. That is why I needed a space of my own. Though I am renter right now, and my furniture consists of hand-me-downs, it's still my humble little place, with a locking door and warm fire place. For those who are controllers versus inhabiters the need for home, space, privacy will probably never resonate. But this girl would have a hard time living in SL for long with a room of her own.

Having a piece of land really is something different. if you want to go for it I would tell you to check out sites who actually have a nice surrounding. (I am very happy how azure islands is set up on all of their parcels)

You can rent many of them, which makes it easier for you to find what you want. I do prefer having a small home with only a few things in it and no kitchen or bedroom. my house is more for decoration whereas I do like to have open space on the outside and have friends sit there.

Part of this is due to the fact that most built houses do not take into account how differently you walk / go / fly in sl - many may find it cool to have to go up stairs up and down all the time ... but you don't need to. :)

So I would say go rent some smaller land and try out.
