Firstly the thread you link to (mine) isn't about copying items - its a bout the transfer of items into the teen grid.
For the idea - Zepp is right - you could rez and remove the script. even if its no modify you could take the script from the item or delete it outright. The most you'll get is a warning message.
Skins etc would have no protection obviously.
Items are easier copied 'by the numbers' so this would afford little protection to that.
If an item was being copied due to buggered permissions, it MAY provide some protection, but only if the items script weren't also buggered. If they were - edit out - if in a seperate script - delete.
I don't see this being practical - just a minor annoyance to people who do copy things, and a major annoyance to end users.
The level of protection it give (small) in my opinion doesn't justify the inconvenience of the end user (large).

Plus, considering how often after patches or Asset server screwups permissions DO get changed, all it would take is this happening to kill the system.
1) SL buggers up the perms and griefer #2143345235 can see into the script and get the code number the item uses to contact the security DB and validate.
2) Griefer writes a scripts to create N-billion items using this code number in a validate script. puts scripts in multiple sims at once, creating just enough each sim not to crash the sim.
3) Central security server grinds to a halt having to answer queries and send delete messages to the items. No one can res / or they instantly destruct items.
Too easy to hose the system over and affect tons of folks.
Not to mention I can see many people (myself included) that WON'T knowingly buy items that had this code in them. Why? Well, thanks to asset server problems, I have had items I have bought and items that I have MADE disappear, lose textures on them, have scripts become unable to be viewed or executed (but are +mod/+copy OK), and other assorted nastiness. The current grid and asset system are NOT stable enough for this form of puntative copy protection.
