Wow look at this

http://secondlife.com/apps/map/postcard_map/show#

Scary thing is, it seems faster than the in-world map.

Doesn't seem to be working now.

Well, since cat's out of the bag ...

Multiple reliable sources of mine indicate that the maps will be easily accesable on the web.

Some cool uses I predict:
- websites can show location on map
- tour guide maps (imagine visiting a site that shows clubs, or animation shops, or parks)
- SL driving directions? (heheh)
- when HTML-on-prim comes, custom maps on HUD

Of course, you heard it here, first, before I even heard this was happening:
From: Hiro's blog, October 26

It looks like LL took a snippet of their 2.0 renderer and applied it to work with their map renderer. The new maps look so gorgeous - an unexpected treat of 1.7's release.

I am encouraging LL to make the map images public - so they can be linked to online or as textures in SL - and we will see them used in gaming, searching, and tourist guides.

Ruby on Rails is supposed to be ultra-slick. But I'm always leery of these appserver-in-a-box kits. They're your best friend until you need to do something that wasn't foreseen by the kit developers, then they turn into a colossal PITA. But Ruby is so, so flexible...

The Pragprogs have been big fans of Ruby ever since, and recently published a how-to guide on Rails. I'm planning on pulling that down for a read before I spend any time with the package itself.

It hasn't worked for me yet. Do I need a plugin? Or does it only work with IE?

It works fine on my firefox.
I just picked 3 of my closest friends and showed them that link. Reactions:
"neat!"
"interesting"
"weird. no urban planning?"

Heh, my system started out with this as a goal, kinda glad I was beaten this time... though a year of work's still going to continue without stopping on mine.

I just have more resources for my system is all, this map's wonderful, and I am glad to see it designed to be slim.

Hiro, uhh, driving directions was part of /my/ map concept when I started designing it.
I don't think LL had it in mind specifically, though I could be wrong...

Then again, it's not like my project's that unique anymore. x.x

I'm very suprized by how close you can zoom in!

Now we just need av's to show up so we can have and say hi! :-D

If HTML on a prim is delayed, it's seem SL in HTML will bridge the gap.
(if we can't bring more of the web to SL, bring more SL to the web)

I plan to show people this map and say "I live riiiight.. THERE".

oh and the view post card seems to be working!

They need to make it more obvious that you're supposed to click on the little circles.

Some text above the map saying "click on dots for further information"

I gotta admit though, that is F*cking cool

It actually is dynamically pulled data, however it is, still in beta, and thus instructions haven't been finalized in favor of making functional code.

Public display has only been this week.

We're preparing it for official rollout and would love to see more load on it before hand, so if you haven't checked it out please have a look at http://secondlife.com/map/.

How about some verbage saying to click on the little dots? I didn't click on them at first which is a shame because they're pretty cool and really the map doesn't make a lot of sense without them.

The secondlife.com home page has "Snapshot taken an hour ago" with a little green dot beside it, for example.

what blaze just said, and a way to close the events dots (unless my browser is not showing it) would be very, um, less annoying

there is a way to close the event dots. just click on the x in the upper right hand corner of the event box.

i guess this map is still in beta so instructions have not been put in yet. there should also be a tip that you can look at other parts of the map by dragging the map around with the mouse. that was not obvious to me until i tried it out.

other than that, it's great!

Note for Lindens (bug)
11-07-2005 18:23
I'm getting a problem with the placement of the dots particularly (but not limited to) on low zooms. It happens in Firefox and IE.

And my zoom controls have broken, but no biggie.

Other than that, très cool. :D

Oh, since I'm here, some feature's I'd like:
  1. Option for displaying Sim names (tooltip style would be cool, but whatever)
  2. Ability to save images of sims
  3. Ability to create a URL pointing to a particular point on the map
  4. Little teeny avies running about in realtime :p

Keep up the good work. :)
