Actually, that might not be a bad way to encourage people to explore. A free attachment that scans for "historical society" signs or something, and if it finds them, makes an entry in your exploration guidebook. Then people can go forth and put signs wherever they like...

I got dibs on the 'Sweet Mother Of God I'm Lost' badge.

I knew it! The SL forums are PVP.

*egages Invis, runs after Elspeth*

*snicker*

There are non-PVP forums? Where? I never seen 'em.

The signs containing that one are to be placed in a circle surrounding the welcome areas. :)

That's grand, but so far all I've seen in world are either 1) people looking for/advertising sex and/or....

Wait just one minute.

You mean there's more than that in SL....? My god.

You say you understand the idea, and then ignore what it means in the very next breath.

You are basically complaining that other people aren't doing what interests YOU. No kidding; they are doing what interests THEM. You are responsible for your own entertainment.

I lamented that that was all I seemed to be seeing - they are more than welcome to play as they please. And BINGO on the punchline there.

When I lamented the limits of CoH's basic model, and longed for more content, I was told:
Make your own entertainment through role playing yadda yadda yadda.

When I ask about what already exists here, and the lack of variety I had so far witnessed, the response is:

You are responsible for your own entertainment.

If I am responsible for my own entertainemnt in this matter, WHAT am I paying them for? I can make clothes, build things, travel in First Life. In fact, since it's a public venue and others will no doubt be entertained with things I make and do, shouldn't I be getting paid, as I do in First Life, for providing entertainment (I work in film and tv)?

I was seeking further examples of what was possible in this world before I invested time and effort into building something here only to have the community prove to be disappointing - because ultimately, despite juvenile protests of "self entertainment", the community is a large part of the entertainment design of this "product". If you just wanted to make things, you could do so with any number of 3D programs much more elegantly and fluidly. If you just wanted to explore 3D worlds, there are any number of massive world standalones. It's the community, the people. The social element. To suggest otherwise is specious.

Also while I agree that I'd much rather see people expressing themselves in a healthy sexual manner than blowing each other's heads off, I am entitled to find BDSM play-acting tiresome.
<the rest of the snarky response, proselytizing, and condescention snipped>

Anyway.

Thank you for your input - impolitic though it may be.
Cheers!

(PS: I hate the zookeeper badge - it exemplifies everything that is wrong with CoH)

City of Heroes is awesome!

It was a refreshing lack of commitment there that made it so appealing after spending time in a galaxy far far away as a shopkeeper.

Still there on Triumph (though Second Life is creeping up on favorite spot simply because it has the CoH prereq for me - flight.) Doc Martian - one of the founding members of TSAR before the dark days... and the Dread Engremore, and of course, Iron Max.

Cheers!

I don't know. What ARE you paying them for? Basic accounts are free (or rather, the first one is, and the others are flat fee of a whopping $10). Nothing else is required.

You can get paid. Whether anybody thinks what you provide is worth paying for is a different story.

And you implied you didn't want to do that.

I am well aware of this, being a Lightwave owner and the sort of person that buys first person shooters less for the game than to have a new engine to build in.

In fact, I originally said exactly that in my post ... pointing out that MMOs are glorified chat programs as well ... they certainly don't seem to be about any sort of entertaining gameplay, and most long-term subscribers that I know stay mostly because of their friends, not the game.

Sure. The astute reader will realize that this logic can also be applied to the manner in which you were posting.

You get what you pay for. If you are going to come in snarky and condescending, don't act surprised when you get it right back.

In any case, I edited my post before I saw your reply, to tone it down because it DID come across that way. Have you tried editing yours?

Yeah, I forgot about Bingtris!. I was getting into that game, I even thought I was getting good at it. Then I started seeing your scores everywhere. I gave up after that.

I'd suggest visiting Caledon, especially during the evening (US time) when more residents are likely to be there. There, a glimpse of ankle is considered to be the height of titillation.

As a neo-Victorian->steamish-punkish-kinda place, there seem to be a large number of people with large amounts of not-very-well supressed creativity, and I suspect you might find some kindred spirit or other with whom you might strike up an interesting conversation.

Or...you might end up being really, really, really bored. After all, is is neoVictorian. I haven't been, but then I'm easily amused by things like the current friendly wholly unoffical competition to design exportable submersibles and airships of novel design and features.

CAPITAL!

The Victorian model is a brilliant place to kick off from - ordered, polite, but an age of exploration and invention when the world still had many blank spots on the map. When a simple soldier could become a King of Kafurastan. Yes, an age of sexual repression (and contrary to what some may think, I never had a problem with people playing at sex in the world, so much as that being ALL I was seeing, and the generally juvenile application) but lest we forget, the age when many of D/s' codifications came from.

I'm only tangentially familiar with "steam-punk" - Gibson's "Difference Engine" meets "League of Extrordinary Gentlemen" (the comics, not the movie), with a seasoning of Victorian Goth/retro rivethead thrown in, yes?

Now I just need to find some decent tutorials on building - anything online, or is it primarily an in-world tutorial system?

Cheers!
