*sings "The Day the Voting Station Died"* Ahh memories. Don't you oldbies miss that lovely sound when someone voted lol? I remember Neph and Neil almost left us during that time, so glad they didn't :).

Well, I think we're going to hit another inflection point of sorts fairly soon.

Wow. Yes. I remember it well. I still don't think anything has topped that one for pure 'zomgz!' factor and world changing consequences. Not even P2P.

I had to buy like another 12000m of land to keep the builds I had (yes, I'm a prim hog... but in my defence it wasn't like anyone was using the prims, the sim was pretty prim light and there were only about 5 seperate owners)... but since we got prim tax refunded on everything we had out, that day made me way rich enough to buy it!

Iono if anyone else will, but I found this quite interesting. This was an extract from my SL blog entry at the time about 1.2:

From: someone

Except right now I don't much feel like it anyway cuz I'm having a Second Life crisis of faith.

If it wasn't for the fact I joined under 1.1 and could actually afford some land back in the day, I wouldn't be here now. And if I'd known 1.2 was gonna turn out the way it was, I don't think I'd have got a life membership.

It's all so bloody mercenary now. And you're constantly forced to think in terms of RL dollars instead of virtual money. And when you look at what has happened in a few short weeks, it's just crazy.

I bought land in Immac for the equivalent of about $32usd. If I wanted the same size plot of land now I could expect to pay $200usd. How is that making the game better?

Yes, I build big. Yes, I agree that under 1.1 I was potentially depriving someone else of their prims by doing so. But then not everyone builds a lot on their land. And now under 1.2 you're forced to hold so much land to cover your prims - instead of owning a 1000m or so, I now have to own 12000 just to sustain my builds, despite only building on a quarter of that. And I have to pay $40 a month for it. Over my lifetime allocation, that is.
And that's just to keep what I have now. But what good is that? I came here to build. I can no longer afford to build. To be able to build any more, I'd have to go to $75 a month. And that's just stupid.

So what do I do now?

*sigh*

In context: before this, we paid $14.95 a month to subscribe, and that was your only cost. Though as mentioned I'd recently got a lifetime membership.

Of course, this was all so much horseshit from me... I then went on to buy one of the worlds first private islands the second they were offered. :o

Thanks for posting that - it kinda helps put 1.8 in perspective for me.

Although, I can see - the transition to 1.2 was even more significant.

No flamefest, nobody getting down on anybody else for a difference of opinion, no cliques or exclusionary crowds, a real attempt to work out the problems without posturing, and real participation by the Lindens. ZOMG. I'm sorry I missed out on Second Life.

I'm sorry to say... you did. Really. It really, really was a totally different world back then.

That had to have been at least a million years ago. at LEAST. *wanders off to find 1.2 and thank it for prim hair*

I find it entertaining that the people who seem to have been complaining the most were the lifers...and yet here at 1.8 i can't count the amount of times i've wished i dropped the 200$ for a lifetime. aah well...

After reading through that thread I couldn't resist doing some searches on "bookcase prims" etc., and it was cool to witness virtual history unfolding. It's like the SL History Channel!

Gah! I remember 1.2 - what a mess - I lost 1/2 my house and my Stillman Suntower. *sniff*

I'm wondering how this effects things like uploading textures will we now have to pay a fee for that as well?

Muahahahaha

From: someone

What about other changes? Havok 2 and the UI changes that were rumored for 1.2? Any word?

Cory Linden: Havok 2 is not in this release because we have instead focused on viewer frame rate improvements, especially for situations with large numbers of avatars in view. Parties will work much better now!

Rolls on the floor creating quite a spectacle for the people in neighboring cubes ::snort::.

Aww, that was certainly the most drastic change in SL I have seen. I was going to buy a lifetime membership but didn't because of all that. I have a post on page three which I stand by except for the "likely to leave" part seeing how I'm here today. I still can't offer a great alternative; the pre 1.2 system was not going to work long term.

Well, I missed all of this :), I was playing TSO/There at the time :P. why didn't one of you come find me and drag me over to play?

Now, undeniably RL assets do show in SL. There are some very noteable examples of people having enough money RL to fund large projects in SL. However, there are also a lot of people who make enough in SL to pay their SL expenses. Some of those people have quite a few SL expenses. Those people do it with either creativity, technical knowhow, or entrepreneurial investments. I think all in all, the economic changes they made at that point were pretty good.

Now as for technical changes/improvements... Where is havok2?! Do I sound like a broken record? maybe it's because the collision precision of havok is 0.01 and the ridges on my shiny vinal surface are 0.0005! Semi Kidding :). It is a tough job, but that post is 2 years old. Havok2 wasn't something they were thinking about 2 years ago, it was something they thought might be released 2 years ago.
