Anyone ever have this happen to them?

On about 3 occasions now (and always when I am in a crowded Sim), my AV has suddenly changed its gender, appearance and is suddenly wearing clothes I dont own.

Of course, this is pretty darn annoying when it happens, forcing me to reload my appearance and re-attach any appearance items.

Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. If so, is it a personal attack, or just a bug?

I once had my gender changed as part of a client crash. I was real new at the time, so I had no idea how to change back and fix my appearance.

It was a fairly common occurence after TPing once upon a time (termed "getting Ruthed", in reference to the default female AV) . I have not heard of it happening spontaneously, though that is much, much more funny.

Throw a backup outfit, shape and skin all in one folder and drag that folder onto your AV for a quick change back to a more reasonable look.

Gospel, Gabe, Gospel. I don't get ruthed too often anymore, and this is the first spontaneus occurance I'm aware of. But I do have my primary skin and outfit in one folder call !Burke (the ! so it's on top of the list) that I can drag on myself to reload.

Well there was this one time at YadNi's Junkyard (I believe this was my second day in SL), I was just standing there, minding my own business, wondering what would posess someone to build a 20-ft statue of themselves, when suddenly, out of the blue, I became female, and I had on some skimpy lace, which I did not own. Btw, this was not the default AV that I had turned into (but I have been turned into that one before, and 9/10 times it was not by my choice!) (The other time I got curious.)

Then there was this other time, at band camp...

Also, Gabe, thanks for the heads up with the folder dragging on the AV thing. Honestly, I really spend too much time designing, and not enough on appearance.... which may be why I wear 2 large prims, textured to look like a robot.

Um when you buy from boxes that contain clothing, be sure to uncheck TRY ON NOW. I've worn some pretty suacy t-shirts accidentally that way.

Yep, it happens ALOT. And then when I go to change back, it asks me "Do you want to save these changes?" like I was editing my appearance....

One of these days I know I'll hit yes by accident. haha. :)

Accidental gender change is nothing new to MMORPGs. In Ragnarok Online, if you change gender, it means you're using an illegal third-party program ("bot";).

No gender changes for me in SL, but once I logged in to find it didn't load my flab. ("Hey, who performed a gastric bypass on me while I was sleeping?";)

Here. Go throw some votes into this and see if we can get LL to fix this in the next update.

This's happened to me a few times before, always when tping to the welcome area and walking to the fountain. . It sucks, but isn't hard to fix.

Next time this happens to you, see if relogging will cure it.

One time in a panic I, after this happened, I just shut down SL, and started it back up—and voila!

There are a few others ways to deal with it but they're no good unless one is calm. For example, you can enter Appearance, and then leave it without saving, but I've seen some in a fluster overwrite themselves.

Here's another great historical link about being Ruthed... searching the SL Forums yields even more:

Ah yes, the dreaded 'complete and utter avatar texture fuckup.
Happened to me a few times, sometimes it would ruin an asset completely. I've seen the affect jump clients (computer a does it, then computer b) using different hardware, so it appears to be a jiggle with the asset server and the client.
