You know, lots of people in this thread are getting all riled up and politicised and laying accusations of homophobia, please read the fricking posts I made a zillion times. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SEX OR SEXUALITY IT IS TO DO WITH TRUST.

I don't personally know ANYONE that it would matter to. Who the fuck is it that you think are so bigotted they're not going to want to interact with someone because of their gender? Really. I'd love to know so I can add them to my mute and ignore lists.

Anyone who needs to know who or what I am irl knows. The rest have absolutely zero right to know. And anyone who actually feels they need to know - presumably so they can treat you differently, because I can't see ANY reason why anyone I'm not in an intimate relationship with needs to know at all - can just fuck right off, because you're not the sort of person I want to know or deal with anyway.

And frankly, fuck trust. Why on earth would you trust someone in SL? SL is full of anonymous fucking psychopaths and some seriously disturbed people with real issues. I'll pick and choose who I tell my real life details to VERY carefully, thanks.

How do you determine I am a female in RL? You get a phone call from me? Or do I need to talk with me over the net? How do you know it is really me during each log on? Is their an attachment to my comp where my finger print is detected? Perhaps gentic pattern?

Yay, such a system would only further promote homophobia, regardless of whether your intentions were noble or not. A few points to keep in mind:

1) What about transgendered individuals? Gender (mental) and sex (physical) are not always the same. I've many friends who are such, and quite frankly treat them appropriately. I do know there are those who'll never accept such individuals, but that is their problem. Reality is never as simple as we make things out to be.

2) What about hermaphroditic individuals? Contrary to popular belief, male and female are not the only sexes. I actually do know at least one person who fits this description. While some people might go "Eww!" at this concept, heh, welcome to reality people. In hir case, it's purely genetic, shi had no alterations or the like. Why should shi be descrimiated against because hir genetics don't don't fit into the mold?

3) What about furries, robots, vampires, etc.? I know people who can accept all these things and don't make a big deal of it. But a person's sex? Oh noes! Someone who's playing the opposite gender must be the evil! Seriously, why should sex matter so much more than any of these things, unless you're planning on sexxing them IRL? Sounds like a person whining about this probably has more issues the person they are claiming is "lying". Double-standards at its finest, people.

4) "Your world, your imagination." Such could be said, not only of Second Life, but the internet in general. If you haven't learned yet that people on the internet are not always what they appear to be, now's a good time to realize that. I think it's quite humorous anyone who's been online for any significant length of time yet has not realized this truth. Sometimes people do lie, but often people are just expressing things here that they cannot IRL. (And many will tell you the truth if you just ask!!!) Seriously, grow up and get over it.

How many people have avatars that exactly resemble their real life selves? I seem to see a LOT of avatars that meet society's stereotypes of beauty running around in Second Life. I'm not a betting man, but I'm willing to put money down that less than 75% of the people with the "perfect" avatars don't look like that behind the keyboard, regardless of gender.

Now, I don't fornicate in Second life, nor do I posess any genetalia, and don't have any plans to purchase any, so I can't comment on the sexual aspect of 'faking' your gender.

As for everything else, this is your SECOND life. It's a place to be all you can be, do whatever you want, and have fun!

Personally, I don't care who has what behind the keyboard, no more do I really care about who has what in-world.

I'm a straight male, and a cuddlewhore. I'm equal opportunity, and will pretty much cuddle anything that moves, male or female, so gender isn't an issue for me.

Besides, if there are guys that can act convincingly like a woman, convincingly enough to make some people paranoid, and want to verify gender; more power to them! I haven't met many dudes that could pull off a convincing female avatar: as it's been said, most of them talk like guys, wear whorish clothing, have an arse the size of an aircraft carrier, and gravity-defying boobs so large, I could park my car on 'em.

The only reason I can see for a gender verification is if your goal is to hook up romanticly in RL. That isn't my goal (but if it happens, that's cool too... but I need to really know someone before I take that step, better than a GV service would ever provide).

For me SL is a chance to be what I really want to be. Me. Inside my head, not what my chromosomes say. The me I would like to be if I could have the body I wanted without the cost, time and effort. Its also a chance for me to find people who like me for being myself and not for what "role" i'm supposed to be in.

I have no objection if people want to set up a gender verification for others who are intrested in that. To me its just another sub-culture in SL that isn't for me, but that's what I like about SL, we have the freedom to choose to do things like this if we want.

This topic is still silly, with the advances in Surgery are you sure the person who appears to be a certain gender is really that gender? Are we going to require genentic testing next? How about inplanting a microchip in each and every person by the goverment. Perhaps with a mark? Say in the forehead or right hand. I know what this is called does anyone else? Since someone else resurrected this thread, it's my turn to tell a story. I went to the Michigan Womens Music Festival, I think it was 10 years ago. This is a huge women-only festival in.. yes, Michigan.

Every year there was some sort of drama, and the year I went the drama was that you had to be a "woman born a woman" to attend. I'm not going to go into the pros and cons on that argument here, but rather tell you about the protest camp that sprung up outside the gate.

A group of post-op male->female trans-sexuals were prostesting not being allowed to attend. They held a weenie roast (which is even funnier since the festival is vegetarian) and invited people to come meet and chat. I had to go of course. On transie girl was telling us about the surgery, etc.... and a few minutes later she hopped on the table and displayed the results.

I have to tell you, I have seen a number of girl bits socially, and I would never have known they weren't the real deal. And, assumptions aside, she looked as feminine, if not more so than some of the dykes at the festival (way less facial hair!)

BTW... I've never understood the sometime bias in the lesbian community against male -> trans-sexuals. I can't think of a bigger rejection of your maleness than to cut off your dick and balls.

One question Surreal Farber, how did the people running the event know a "real" women from a "fake" one? Dont they change the sex on things like drivers license in America. Even in Japan we are starting to alow the correcting of family registers to show the change of gender. So how would they know?

As an ex-fauxbian I can tell you that you would only lose subscribers to SL and LL knows that and therefore it will never happen. Personal privacy is very important.
