Pathetic state of inventory functionality in 1.10.2

I problem I have been having: I open a folder with say, a pair of shoes, put on one shoe, suddenly every single one of the folders in my inventory opens! Close all folders, put on second shoe, happens again.

Needless to say, I'm not changing shoes for a while...

The search popping back to the top of the window only seems to happen the first time I do a search and if I stay in the same sim, my next search stays were the item is found. I am assuming this has something to do with the cashe. But if I leave a sim and do a search, it pops back. (BTW - This is NOT a new problem).

The recent items window - for me will be very handy when organizing items from snaps to vendors prims ..etc.
But I have noticed that items don't stay in recent if you move into another sim.

My observations :-)

UPDATE: The following inventory bug fixes--and more!--should be included in the next new version of Second Life:
  1. "Show all folders" filter should be off by default for "All items" tab (this is the "every single damn folder is appearing when I search!" problem)

  2. During inventory streaming, every single folder expands when alternating clicks on All items and Recent Items tabs

  3. Focus is lost on a selected folder when search query is deleted--all folders expand instead

  4. Items in folders given via llGiveInventoryList have inaccurate acquired dates

  5. Receiving or moving inventory expands all folders when "Show All Folders" is not checked

  6. Deleting any inworld object you own expands Trash folder and obscures Recent Items tab view
From: Karen Linden
Second Life 1.10.3 is scheduled for release on Wednesday, June 14, 2006. The update is scheduled from 7am PT/SLT to 12pm PT/SLT. During that time a database restart is required, which means the secondlife.com website may be down for a short time as well.

Both server and client code will be deployed; therefore, a new viewer will be required to access this version. Release notes will be available on Monday pending the final verification of all features.

CONTEXT: /3/e8/112891/1.html

Please share this with your loved ones and friends who are also affected. There are more bugs we know of too... like the "Scrollbar repeatedly resets to position of first search match when it's streaming or when a Friend comes online" which has to do with focus not switching as expected. These will be fixed ASAP too.

Any other bugs that aren't nailed down to the floor and squished (in a gory Stephen Kingesque fashion), please use HELP menu > REPORT BUG to send a solid reproduction of the steps you did to make it happen.

I know what a hunger there is for information so I wanted to share this right away; I'd feel so guilty if you guys didn't know relief was on the way soon. :/

Ah, that'd be the one checkbox that makes a YUGE difference. In Inventory window, FILTERS menu > MODIFY CURRENT and uncheck SHOW ALL FOLDERS in the ALL ITEMS tab. Which it should default to off. Which we know about. Which should be fixed soon.

I'll post this here too:

Lotsa Resis asked that more info be given... so YES! The following are known inventory bugs we wanna fix ASAP:
  1. Receiving or moving inventory expands all folders when "Show All Folders" is not checked
  2. Deleting any inworld object you own expands Trash folder and obscures Recent Items tab view
  3. During inventory streaming, every single folder expands when alternating clicks on All items and Recent Items tabs
  4. Focus is lost on a selected folder when search query is deleted--all folders expand instead
As well as similar "folders expanded unwantedly" bugs.

Please help spread the word and send in new bug reports inworld with your step-by-step instructions from HELP menu > REPORT BUG.

We're hot on the trail.

Thanks, Torley! That was my biggest complaint. I have to ask though...WHY IS THAT EVEN AN OPTION? Honestly, of what possible use is having that? Did somebody at LL sit down one day and go 'You know, it'd make searching a lot better if I could see hundreds of unrelated and empty folders on my search results.' ?

Yes, but you can't open the folders and access their contents at that point. You need to clear the search, at which point the folder's again lost in the crowd.

We really shouldn't have to clear the search at this point at all. We should be able to open and close the folders that have items in them that match the search without having to clear the search at all.

Yes, yes... we should be able to act on the search results directly without having to clear it first. (e.g, search, see results, double click or be able to expand the folders in the searched-for results to act on them.) That is, of course, more ideal

BUT one thing at a time... let's get to the previous behavior first. While it was odd, at least it worked... you searched, clicked on the folder you wanted from the search results, cleared the search, and then had your searched-for folder focused on which you could then work on.

That's coming back Wed. thank God. (see Torley's post) [yayyy!!!]

One thing I will do moving forward when I have the time... one thing I have learned from this experience, is how important the Preview grid really is.

I will spare the LL QA rant.. been there, said that. =)

Try it out in Preview and find the remaining bugs...

The latest version of Preview (1.10.3.2) has the inventory fixes, or at least all the ones that have been implemented to date. Everybody who is unhappy about the state of inventory handling should go there, try it out, find out what is still wrong, and bug-report it!

No, it doesn't seem to be perfect yet; I have already reported one problem. Yes, it's MUCH better than 1.10.2.

Great! I will check this today... I assume it will be the version rolled out on Wed.

(Torley.. am I right? Generally, is the latest preview build finalized/verified and released?)

A couplle of days ago a friend, clearing up after a griefer attack, managed to accidentaly return a HUGE building and contents to me by careless use of the 'return all 'X's' objects' function in About Land.

Yesterday we were attempting to salvage what we could in preperation for reconstruction. Working my way throught the 1000 or so, mainly unlinked components, mainly helpfully named 'object', I kept being thrown to the top of my inventory tree for no apparent reason.

As you can imagine, this made an already difficult task far worse than it needed to be - thanks LL!

Every time someone on your friend list logs in, I believe it 'resets' the inventory, as the card status changes - or it's something like that, because I have had it happen to me too.

Sucks, yes, but I don't know of any way round it apart from removing all your friends.

People, this is being -fixed- on Wed. Please see above. Trust me, I was one of the loudest complainers out there.

Now that I know it is going to be fixed, there's no reason to continue to complain. (Unless the fixes don't work) =)

There are plenty of reasons to complain.

Some of us have been dealing with LL's whack-job upgrades since 1.0.

There is no way the current version of SL should have made it out of the preview. Is LL using idiots for quality control?

Oh, I agree with you 100%.

But at this point, the complaints about the inventort system have been said over and over - and responded to by Linden accordingly.

I was one of the loudest complainers out there: I wrote a multi-page post to Linden on how their latest screw up with inventory was so obviously broken that they didn't seem to understand the fundamental laws of humanity. haha yes, I'm serious.

I also questioned their QA... or lack of it. I could not believe such fundamental flaws were released past QA.

They got the message, trust me, and are installing fixes this week. They worked with me and others to narrow down the bugs, apologize, and implement fixes rapidly. Torley Linden, Brent Linden... they were both extremely helpful. Torley went out of her way to try and understand the issues and enhance communication. I'm not trying to kiss ass here, I am just stating fact.

So I think credit should be given to those who cared enough to do anything about it.

All of that said, what happens in the future in regards to QA however remains to be seen.

For example: we were asked over and over to participate in the latest Preview to help them bugfix, etc.

But when I try to download the latest preview (1.10.3.2) for the Mac... I can't. All that is available it is an earlier version (1.10.3.1) than the Windows one that includes all the inventory fixes. I guess they went home before they built the latest Mac preview.

So if the Mac client doesn't work on Wed... at least they can't say I didn't try to help and test it. =)

....

My point is this: I agree with you. LL's QA needs a LOT of work. But they did respond rather quickly on trying to fix things this time around, fixed just about all the major bugs (according to the preview release notes), and did it working with the community.

To rehash the issue over and over once they have implemented the fixes is kind of pointless. There are new fish to fry.

I am sorry to say I cant imagine the mind that produced this new inventory system. Cris is right, its unintuitive and unworkable. My inventory was a nightmare before that I could not imagine would become worse, but now, my old inventory seems downright organized compared to this horror!

Who the hell developed this......
