I am a terriby disorganized person, in both RL and SL. I've kind of learned to live with being disorganized in RL, but I'd like to try to improve my organization in SL so that I can get something accomplished occasionally! So I'd like to know if anyone can offer any tips on organizing inventory. What folders you have inside what folders, any particular folder sets I might not have thought of, folder names, etc. Any ideas, really, would be most appreciated. Also, is it safe for us to muck around with inventory today? I saw a global message last night that said not to, just want to make sure it's ok now before I start implementing any ideas. Impster

I decided from now on - I'm gonna keep my "object" folder empty, instead of full of subfolders like now. Its the place new stuff arrives, and needs to be kept clear like a landing platform.

I did this a little bit ago and it has been a source of unbridled joy when I go successfully find that new item I just got.

This is what I use, pretty much my catch all for when I need to file or fill out something in SL. Hope it helps. Ps. I'm not to sure how complete it is, if you have something you think I missed, please point it out....

I have no organization - I have the search tool. =P
Really, my "objects" folder is full of random things.

Then you don't have to ever deal with the odd bulk or go digging for newer items that are not quite at the top of the date sort. Yes I shall do this too. Thank you Ellie. Organization Tip #17: Keep your inventory as trim as possible. Trust me on this one. Organization Tip #17 is also Performance Tip #4 btw.

um.. good idea for a thread.. needs more tips tho'! Here are my current methods... 1. I like the idea of keeping Objects Folder clear... (nods firmly in agreement) 2. I added one Objects Subfolder called "Boxes I have Unpacked" where I put... well, boxes I have unpacked um.. what else.. oh! 3. Having finally bought a first land and made a box to live in, I have a folder called "00 Home Stuff" where I keep... well, stuff I keep in my home 4. I have several folders called "01 Project X", "01 Project Y", "01 Project Z" etc. for work for my clients 5. For my custom folders, as you see above, I use 00 to prefix folders at the top, followed by 01 etc. 6. For the "comes with" folders like Clothing, Body Parts, Animations I make subfolders using 00, 01 clumping 7. Whenever I get a bunch of free or bought stuff, I spend time at "home" making folders or subfolders to unpack it into, then move the folders to the "best" location in my hierarchy I end up opening at LEAST two INV windows when sorting like this 8. Current frustrations are huge number of entries now in Landmarks, Calling Cards, and Note Cards... am using Subfolders to cluster these but seem to always be more behind on these 9. Oh yes the wonderful "worn" tip... type "worn" in your INV search box and it shows what you have on. That is all I can think of for now... hope this primes the pump for more tips

Some things you get will let you rename them. I find it can be nice to add the creator's name to the ittem name, then you do a search by creator name.
For clothing items I find it good to name them like this: Pants Bluejean by Jonquile Noir, with the type of item at the beginning.

This particular thread helped me as I was starting out (just a few weeks ago). Now I have something to add.
The suggestion to keep the Objects folder clear is a good one. Also opening two inventory windows at the same time (File menu, choose New Window) helps when moving things around.
I decided to go a step further and keep all of the standard folders empty, not just Objects. I made a new folder called Z Inventory. Under that I made folders Z Animations, Z Body Parts, Z Clothing, etc, duplicating the whole set. I used Z so it would be at the bottom, since the folders are alphabetical. Now whenever I buy something new or someone gives me something, it's quite easy to find it... and I soon move it into its proper spot in my Z folders.
I tried a few other Z folders to help organize things too... such as ZZZ new stuff or ZZZ free stuff. But nothing as grand as the above idea.
Another tip: create subfolders (File menu, choose New Folder, then when the new folder appears, rename it), many and often. I have lots of folders under Clothing for example... and more folders inside those folders, and I'll probably put folders inside some of those. Just to be excessively organized.
Next tip: free stuff. If you use the finder you can find several places that have free stuff for you to take (or for L$1). Usually they come in a box, so you'll have to put the box on the ground and take the stuff out of it. They're not all exactly the same, but there are many duplicates. If you get 100 boxes of free stuff you'll probably end up deleting most of them because you've got dozens of copies of the same thing. You can also find copies of the free stuff selling for up to L$50 each in various shops... buyer beware.
My next trick will be to figure out what to do with boxes. I'm still working on it. Sometimes I'll have an item called 'fancy jewelry'. By far the best way to use it is to 'wear' it. But it came in a box called 'fancy jewelry'. If I choose the box and select 'wear', I just get a big box on my head. The thing is the box and the actual jewelry look identical in inventory... it's hard to tell them apart. I suppose I could delete every box after unpacking it. But that seems excessive, there are some I'd like to keep, perhaps to give copies to friends. I'd like to rename them all to 'Box of ', but sometimes I don't have modify rights. I'm going to have to find some way to put all boxes in seperate folders or something.

I organize as I see things fill up into multiple categories. For example, some clothesmakers are so prolific and I have a lot of their schtuff. So, natural I make special folders for them. I have a lot of customized watermelon goodies, so again, I sort those out. If I realize there are many objects with common traits that I realize would be better served by putting in the same folder, I do it. It's a very natural and organic process.

Here's an organization tip for builders: Name EVERYTHING. When you clean out your inventory take anything named "Object" and rez it. Then either delete or rename and file it.

I create boxes for storage of things I haven't used in a bit. I have an "old clothes" box, an "old objects" box etc. If you have furniture in your house you can keep things there too. Like keeping clothing in a dresser. Just edit the object, hit the "more" button, click the "content" tab and drop stuff in. The good thing about keeping the inventory empty is it's much faster logging in.

A cautionary tale for ya... Back in December of 2004 - we moved the Shelter from its old location in Fudo, to its present location in Isabel/Wingo. We did it all in secrecy - holding our regular event schedule in Fudo while stealthly building up the "Exact Replica Build" in Isabel. Then the night of the official move - teleporting all the guests over to the new location one by one to their surprise. Anyway - once that was all over, I had the old build to contend with. I figured, why not just let the new owner return it to me when they're ready. And they did. **Thousands** of objects in my inventory named 'Object'.

my invenory sucks at being organized..lol..I just add folders where i see fit..but one thing i did find works great for unpacking "boxes" is a simple llGiveInventoryList() script.. which drops the objects contents in a new folder in your inventory ...just rez the box and touch..If anybody wants a copy of the script drop me an IM in game.

I use a combination of keeping my default linden folders (Objects, animations, etc) clear and make a second one of the same name and place my stuff in those newly made folders. For clothes I break it down by store if I bought a few things from them like "Canimal", "Munch", "simone", "chaosspire", etc. Each clothing set I buy then has it's own folder in there. I also have a personal fodler where all my work goes into. I also have alot of stuff I don't or should not use often (Freebies, weapons, etc) and those I use THINC inventroy boxes for. Works great when you get a box with a copy item in it so you can keep the box with the orgional in it. My Texture folder is normally divided into free textures I got, ones I bought, and ones I uploaded. THen divided into categories. one hint for snapshots RENAME THEM RIGHT AWAY! Hope this helps.
