Ranma, back when I played TSO, I would try to tell my co-workers about it, but their eyes kept glazing over. I have since realized that those not in the nerd category will never understand the cool factor of TSO (then) and SL (now). Some of my co-workers "get it" so to speak, but I do happen to currently work in a creative environment with a lot of early to mid 20somethings rather than the typical work force. _____________________

The only time I spoke about SL in a job interview, the recruiter freaked out
![]() ![]() I got me a couple ideas of RL businesses I could sell a SL package to, for a lot of money. I'm saving it for when I'm unemployed again, hmmm. _____________________

I tried to get college credit from just Intermediate Programming using the results of the Game Dev Competition. Their response: "Huh?" Academics... ![]() And no, that isn't a joke. Ya? Well, the academics I know are fascinated by Second Life - largely from a business, legal, and sociological point of view. Maybe the problem has to do with the types of tekkiwikiwookie "academics" you deal with in the computer sciences? _____________________

I know a whole bunch of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE) PhD students, and NONE of them are interested in SL, despite doing my best to appeal to their geekiness. They'd rather play MMORPGS than give it a try. Shock! Dismay!

They'd rather play MMORPGS than give it a try. Shock! Dismay! *WEIRD*. When I tell other programmers that SL is the Metaverse, they ask "what's the URL again?", and I make sure they write my name down for recommendation bonus. Maybe Snow Crash isn't as popular with EEs? _____________________

Maybe the problem has to do with the types of tekkiwikiwookie "academics" you deal with in the computer sciences? Pretty much. I asked them if they knew what a "quaternion" was. They thought I'd lost my mind. (For the uninitiated, that's what rotations are in SL) _____________________

I was talking to someone in my Jobs IM about which hardware would be best. He asked what I wanted to use it for and I told him.
My co-workers are calling me a Otaku (nerd) now behind my back. ![]() My spouse saw me playing last night and had some rude remarks. Thought my time would be better used cleaning the toilet. Ah, do you need to get the full version of photoshop? It is awfully expensive! |

Ah, do you need to get the full version of photoshop? It is awfully expensive! Ranma, there are several alternatives to Photoshop you can use. First, if you're up for spending some money, is Paintshop Pro. I believe its in the $200 range. There's also a free, open-source application, The GIMP, which is a really great app, but suffers from the same problems that a lot of free, open-source apps do: horrible interface, and a TERRIBLE name! You can find info about the GIMP here: http://www.gimp.org/ You can download a Windoze version here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html As to your spouse not appreciating it, let them give it a try! For the first month I was in SL, Jennyfur would say, "Are you playing that STOOPID game again?" After about a month, I got her to try it... and here we are, 2 years later! ![]() Regards, -Flip _____________________

I just got a copy of it but not sure where to start. I would like to make a skin that looks like me more or less. The available skins have some unusual ideals on how to represent a women. Where do I start? I would also like to make a Japanese Flag to fly above my property. Also some signs with Kanji characters. "As to your spouse not appreciating it, let them give it a try! He likes to come home and drink. Anyhow I thought there can only be one account per IP address? There are various tutorial around on getting started with programs like Photoshop and GIMP. If you check the design forum, its a good place to start. There can be more than one account per IP, I'm pretty sure? I know they've changed the rules on alt accounts a lot over the years, but I still have about a lot for various purposes! As for drinking, many people drink while playing SL - in fact, there have been in world pub crawls, and all kinds of crowds that enjoy a scotch or some wine while SLing. In other news, Jennyfur got a great job offer yesterday - and her SL skills had a lot to do with it! YAY! Regards, -Flip _____________________

Jennyfur got a great job offer yesterday Hooray Jennyfur!! ... many people drink while playing SL ... Hooray Beer!! ![]() Seriously, that's pretty darn cool! And I'd wager this sort of thing is more likely to happen to the average SLer than becoming so successful in-world that it becomes their sole means of support. Though hey, I'd love to be proven wrong... Er, no, I'd love to prove myself wrong! _____________________
