Are They Going to Fix These Hexagons or What?

I can't find the thread where this was being discussed. Last I read, Torley said it would be fixed in an upcoming update, by turning the levels up or something.

Will that really fix it?

As far as I'm concerned, a world in which circles are actually hexagons is useless.

No Coco, I serously doubt they'll put any extraordinary effort into it. It's not like it's gonna cost them anything if it doesn't get fixed before 2007. What are we gonna do, tier down and play some other game instead of hanging around in SL? That's a big negatory and they know it.

They'll only worry when Governor Linden starts accumulating land en masse, new sim auctions stagnate, and estate sales decline. Until then, it doesn't matter what we think or say. It doesn't matter at all.

Thanks, Surreal. I knew it was somewhere!

I'm concerned that they will fix this well ENOUGH, Khamon, really. I figure they have to fix it. Otherwise there is no point in making stuff or being here.

But I can also see them fixing it in such a way as most users will still always see hexagons.

The whole thing - SL entirely, I mean - reminds me of an old joke, that goes something like this (I'm not too good at telling jokes):

---------

Man walks into the tailor's to pick up the new suit he ordered. It's beautiful, and just what he wanted, but trying it on, he sees it's far from perfect.

"Look here," he says to the tailor. "One arm is shorter than the other."

"Yes, but just a little bit," says the tailor, "Hike up your shoulder some. There, now doesn't that look a lot better?"

"Well, yes" the man grudgingly replies, "but what about these pants? The waistline is lower than it's supposed to be. My waist is up here!"

"Just kind of hunch over there a bit. See? Now the waist looks perfect!"

"But what about the pants legs? Looks like they are shorter on the inside than on the outside."

"Oh don't worry about that," says the tailor. "Just toe in some and it will be perfect!"

After a few more such adjustments, the man leaves the shop, wearing the suit.

Two guys walking along see him.

"Just look at that poor cripple," one says to the other. "All hunched over and can hardly walk, and one arm's shorter than the other."

"Yeah," says the other guy. "But doesn't that suit fit well!"

-------

SL is like that.

Just for reference, LOD stands for level of detail in this context. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_of_detail_%28programming%29

So, when I complain that LOD can cull things too soon, you start harassing me in the forums with your signature for months.

When someone else complains about LOD making circles into hexagons, you remark with a sarcastic quip about Linden Lab.

Thanks for discrediting your own earlier harassment. :)

OK, I have fiddled with my settings, and with the slider all the way up, I can prevent most of the hexagoning.

But still, things aren't circular like they used to be!

And what about the new player, who won't know this thing is supposed to be slid all the way up, and thinks we actually MADE things that look that terrible?

I hope they fix this so that things look as good as they used to, and so that new players who find these setting quite baffling anyhow won't go around seeing things the wrong way.

As to the forum harassing signatures, Hiro, I feel your pain.

LOD bugs are sporadic and annoying, yes.

Infringement of our civil liberties? Vile abridgement of our rights as human beings?

Well, I don't know that I'm qualified to make those sorts of judgments, so I'll just let you tell us all about that. Take it away, signature...

i don't understand, it is NOT a bug!!!

its the first time the lod do its job, aka reducing the polygon count of all these insane primwhore attachments to an acceptable level for realtime rendering

you peoples never experiences what it is to play a game at more than 25 frames per second?

Well, the bug is, sometimes LOD doesn't shift prim detail back up to the appropriate levels for objects that were far from the camera and then find themselves a meter or less away. In my case, the engine takes as many as 15 seconds or more to figure out "Hey, time to add detail to these objects right in front of me." Ends up making my eyes and glasses look weird for a moment.

Sometimes.

Other times it's fine. Lame, but I'm not losing huge sleep over it.

I can't wait for SL to go to the metaverse, though. Supreme court'll get that bug nipped right out as it bans attachment culling in all 3D environments everywhere (Doe v. Linden Research). Landmark precedent, it will be.

I'm concerned when someone says they're skirt won't fit or their hair because the rezzing doesn't go back to circular when it should. It just has looked really bad lately.

I'm not talking about crazy hairdos.

I'm talking about a simple round table I was sitting at. A simple table. All hexagonal.
