I login to my PayPal account today. On Sept 7, 2006 someone from Russia tried to access my account. I was asked did I give them access to my account? Click no. I had to change my password and my email address. This as never happend until the somone hacked secondlife data base on Sept 6, 2006.

If that email said "Dear Paypal User"... then you have possibly been phished, and should try and change the details immediately.
Paypal know your name from your account details. Why wouldn't they personalise it? You should never, ever click links in emails. I always go straight to the site by typing the address in the URL box, if they want to tell me something they'll tell me there, not in an email. Lewis _____________________

From PayPal.

I had pay pal setup with sl for very short period. and cancled it. Maybe LL notified Paypal and Paypal have put some extra security measures in place for those that have registered accounts with LLs. I have also just checked my Paypal account, which is not registered with LL and didnt get any extra security questions atall. hth a bit _____________________

please explain? The other person who had their Paypal account accessed from Russia used Paypal as their SL payment method. LL has not defined what payment information exactly was stolen - I imagine it was the Payment info that was on file. Even if you cancelled it, perhaps it is still in their DB. _____________________

You would only have the warning if attempts had been made to access your account. True... just eliminating that possibility, that's all... so maybe our hacker gang is from Russia if there is a correlation between the sudden rise in Paypal alerts from SL residents who use Paypal to pay to play. It's possible that the specific payment info was not compromised, but the basic info was.
So all they would have would be, User Name1 Email: john@hotmail.com Payment Method: Pay Pal User Name1 Email: jane@yahoo.com Payment Method: Credit Card If someone uses the same e-mail address for SL as they do for Pay Pal, that would explain the attacks against Pay Pal accounts but no credit cards being charged. _____________________

I'm sure this is the case as I received the PayPal security warning as well even though I do not make payments to SL from this PayPal account or have not purchased any lindens or land from LL using this account. _____________________

There are 654,000 residents. Having something happen to two of them can easily be coincidence. It sucks to be violated, but try to keep some perspective.

April, if you cancel your paypal I'm not sure it's wiped out of the database considering if you are a paid member that has cancelled your account, your credit card info is still in their database. Ever wonder why the number of residents shoot up but never go down? It's because even cancelled accounts from years ago are still being counted. So cancelling your account does not remove your cc info from the database, I doubt it means your pay pal account is deleted as well so basically the only thing cancelling your account does is keep you from playing under that char again unless you pay the fee to re-activate. They shouldn't do that at all! If someone cancels, give them a week at max and then wipe all of their info off the database. If that person has a problem with that, they shouldn't have cancelled. We don't even have options to delete our credit card information if we decide to downgrade either so what advantages do we get from cancelling? none. _____________________

Myopia Cataract,
I think April posted this as a warning to others seeing how the attempt to access her paypal was the day after the break-in to the data base here in SL. Iyt is easy to make a connection between the two. And IMHO a smart thing to bring this to the attention of fellow SL residents. _____________________

So I cant make any purchases. I cant delet delet my credits or cancle the paypal account. The only thing Im able to do is report it to my credit card companise. Im still pissed off. _____________________
