In Second Life, each of us has special and wonderful talent, be it educational, business, or just plain social.

Thanks to each and every one of us for being here these last 3 years and making this amazing world better daily !

Hats off to the best bunch of minds anywhere in the virtual world !

With love and respect, Baccara

Torley's Real Life Alter Ego...
05-09-2006 19:31
Been having this feeling over the past couple of months that Torley reminds me of a certain entertainer / celebrity. With the flashy personna, even flashier costumes, constant verbal patter sometimes bordering on the inane, extremely engaging and entertaining manner, often very informative and always around when you need her (or not). I just could not put my finger on WHO she reminds me of...

Bingo ! It hit me.

Torley's real life alter ego is Joan Rivers.

Think about it..... ;-)

Just kidding around Torley. Here's a BIG CONGRATS on the recent recognition.

See ya on the red carpet....

Musings:

I think he should do a list of Ten Nobodies.

Come to think of it, I think *I* ought to make such a list.

I think I would like to go interview people at random and put them up on that BlawgO'MyOwn that I haven't started. Hmmm.

Wow.

Torley, what does Wagner's spicy sausage taste like? Because... wow.

I must have missed when Torley was on BUSINESSWEEK!

starax sold me non virgin sheep.

and torley rullzers. you go girl!

but lists like this are bogus and can never be anything but subjective. also those who didn't make the list but have contributed greatly or equally may feel slighted. bad thing -- lists like that. didn't we stop electing the prettiest girl prom king when we were in high school?

... which means approximately jack and shit so far as power in a Second Life context goes.

So, quite frankly, does creativity, which is why avalon doesn't get a nod in my book.

Hamlet's list I disagree with in many respects, but in the sense of "people of whom it is unwise to piss off", Anshe is lower on my personal list than many, though I'm in no particular hurry to cheese her off, either. Torley may be a nebulous "Community Team" Linden without even the power of a Liason, but she gets listened to. :p

I can't argue with Torley at #1, and although I would have put Anshe there, and Torley at #2, I must say that it is great to see Baccara get some long-overdue credit!

What I find interesting is the birthdates (excluding Doctorow, who I think we ALL agree doesn't belong anywhere near this list, what with his two log ons ever and empty profile):

Jenna Fairplay: 8/8/2004
Prokofy Neva: 9/28/2004
Francis Chung: 9/22/2003
Aimee Weber: 1/30/2004
Cory Doctorow: 7/12/2005 (Let's all agree to exclude this one, heh)
Anshe Chung: 3/22/2004
Kermitt Quirk: 9/4/2004
Nephilaine Protagonist: 7/22/2003
Baccara Rhodes: 7/10/2003
Torley Linden: 9/15/2004

So by year:
2003: 3
2004: 6
2005: 1, if you include Doctorow, which is a joke.
2006: 0

So, basically, no one with any power has been born since 2004, excluding Hamlet's self-confessed buddy? I know of quite a few born since which should displace at least Doctorow on that list, if not more! :) Oh well, these lists are supposed to stir the pot. While I can't argue with most of the list, it would have been nice to see some 2005 and even a 2006 birth date on there! The most glaring ommission I see is another early date, however: YadNi Monde. His name is on the lips of EVERY new player who sticks around more than a few hours. :)

Regards,

-Flip

He needs to get out more I think. 2005 was a good year for SL. Lots of nifty people joined who are having an impact on SL now.

don't you know by now Flip that those of us born recently aren't worth a shit and should only be kept around so that we can buy things from those who were here in the early years and have real skillz

no i'm not bitter.

Viv and Flipper and right this list is exclusionary, does not take into account those residents who are making and impact NOW, there are many of us born in 2005 that are making an impact on SL and helping, we hope to shape its future.

I would love to see someone make a list of the upstart power elite, or the New FIC if you will, thought god knows I hate that term. Aimee Flipper, please pick up the gauntlet and run with it

Well, I really don't want to get involved in making arbitrary lists, but let's just say the impact that newer residents isn't missed on a lot of us. I'm also going to defend Hamlet here, and say, to HIS Second Life, the people listed probably made the most impact. The world is simply too large for Top 10 lists these days. :)

Out of SLBoutique's top 20 sellers for the month of March, none of them are on the Hamlet's list (granted, only a few on the list sell through SLBoutique). Over half of the sellers in our top 20 joined in 2005 or beyond. Now, I'm not saying that SLBoutique statistics are the "end all, be all" for Second Life - far from it. But its a much larger statistical sampling than you're likely to get elsewhere. :)

-Flip

WTG all you creative people, like many of you I came to SL for artistic reasons but as we all see with the changes that SL made and growth ...its escalated more than we all imagined.

I'm not a big fan when Vanity Fair does this sort of thing and I must say I'm not really sure why Hamlet did it either.

It's not like SL has been around long enough for the "power elite" to truly matter yet. 5 years from now, if the same people are still the ones that show up on this last, then I'll consider them a power elite.

This just seems like red meat thrown to certain conspiracy theorists right now.

hehehe, when the first half came out, I said it would be a crime if you weren't on it. I still think you and YadNi are DEFINITELY top 10! :)

I was not trying to be funny.. I've run into this attitude a lot.

Also I've run into the attitude that content creators are better than everyone else. If you are a content creator that has been here a long long time then you are teh bomb and people that just started and are not content creators are not.

Once again, I'm taking suggestions for an alternate Resident-created list here:

/18/37/101352/1.html

I'll be reposting that Kotaku story this week or next in NWN-- Comments welcome there, too-- and running the Resident-made one right alongside it. There haven't been many names suggested on that one, however, so I encourage folks to do so.
