It does log the individual operator's name - but that only shows up on the logged-in view. :D If you're not logged in (or logged out), you see the public view.

For the public listing, the site owner becomes the 'person who did the banning', and is the one who takes responsibility for it. The name of the site & owner is listed next to every entry.

This makes even more sense. Now if there was only a password recovery feature so I could pull up my info...

What I noticed about the list was the griefers who were unbanned and given a second chance went back to type and were soon banned again! This is got to be a sign that the idea works.

Another sign that the idea works is that last week they had five subscribers, and this week they have ten or so.

I couldn't be happier.

Primary reason we're not adding in the small sites right now: scalability.

Granted, some large sites have a gazillion (read: 30) devices, but even one device has to query the database on regular intervals, regardless of whether there's any grief going on. We have implemented a cache - so these queries are much fewer than they would be. But still, traffic is traffic.

At least right now, we want to make sure that the sites consuming bandwidth on BanLink get some actual benefit out of it. If the large new-site signups start to trail off, and there's still tons of bandwidth to spare, maybe at that point we'll open things up more.

As it is, the community feedback positive & negative has been invaluable, along with the experiences of the initial 10 sites. Everyone seems to have unique challenges, and ends up using the system in a way we hadn't thought of. If and when it is released to more folks, this system will be better for all as a result of this beta.

We had our first couple folks dispute their bans on BanLink recently - and IMHO, it went exactly as we hoped it would. I don't think either side was completely happy about it (The banner having to read the dispute, and the bannee leaving it) - but in the end I think it'll lead to folks being able to make more informed decisions about which sites to trust.
