I don't find the instances that are detrimental to outway the instances where it is not. It is not always detrimental and it is not particularly harmful, despite the apparent outrage.

I know you disagree with my stance and that is AOK.

It comes down to intent I suppose, and a pattern of behavior. One or two threads bumped because someone has something new to add, or is a new player, or whatever, is fine. When someone systematically bumps threads to be disruptive, then it is problematic. There are a couple of spree necroposters in these forums, and we all know exactly who they are - and the intent is always quite clear.

I personally find it better to start a new thread - if the thread is more than a month or two old, I find I won't read it again, no matter what new has been added.

Seriously you cannot punish new people for showing up to the party late and actually using the search button. And sometimes old threads become realavent again.

For instance P2P... It used to be a feature in SL way way way back, and if someone searched for it Im sure they got some threads from a millenia ago in the results.

And WTF is with the RE: RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE: threads on new posts search?? thats even worse than necroposting.

What you describe is a problem with misuse/abuse of the forum, not specifically a problem with the necro act itself. Posting is not bad, but some posters consistently post to be disruptive. This is true whether necro or recent posting is involved.

Because there are legitimate reasons for bumping old threads.

I get that fact because some discussions are worth bringing back once in a while. There even seems to be no real work around that is commonly agreed to for the properly mannered procedure to get an old topic revisited. What I was trying to point out was, if I am the admin of a forum and I have a rule that specifically states no necroposting or you will get banned, it would be easier to have the old threads close themselves then go through the extra 5 steps at 3am to ban someone because they necroposted when I could be using that time to perhaps improve the services I am offering.

I think even in the case of just bumping an old thread because you are interested in the topic is still viewed as bad form by a lot of people. I am not sure what the magic cut off is - but there does definitely reach a point where it makes more sense to start a new thread. I am not against necroposting per se, but as I said, I do tend to avoid threads that are past a certain age in favor of just starting a new one.

You raise an interesting point - it's a funny balance between "god, we already talked about this" when someone starts a new thread, and "god, we already talked about this" when they bump an old thread for last year because people are told to search. You can't win either way it seems lol.

PS - yes, the re: re: re: ANOTHER STUPID HOOCHIE HAIR threads are childish.

Why did you have some strange childhood sexual trauma with an orange anteater looking thing with a foul mouth?

Just for shits and giggles, I'm making a note of this thread, and will bump it in 8 months time.
