I use both. A vendor for the main stuff and boxes for lil' things like sounds, etc.
But yea, setting up a vendor is a pain the ass at times. I just wait till I have a bunch of stuff ready to go and then I update it.

From: crucial Armitage I have always only used selling boxes except for a short time last summer. I believe that boxes can sell your products better if they are displayed correctly. the biggest hassle with selling boxes is set up it takes along time to set up a lot of boxes one at a time. that's why several months ago I started building standard set ups for my items in different size configurations. i can now set up a 250 prim one drop shop in less time then it takes to set out a half a dozen vendors. as for tracking sales i do it in a less orthodox way i use gmail lol. what i do is copy and past my in world transaction history that shows all payments and purchases made from me. i copy that in to an email and send it to my self using the date in the subject line. gmail has such a great search function that i can pull up any transaction made by anyone going back to when i started doing this a year ago Wow!! That is such a GREAT idea! I might have to try that.

I've always wondered why so many people use boxes, so I guess now I know. However for me the lack of being able to track what is sold makes them pretty useless. Having to try and get that data out of the transaction history must be quite annoying. If LL added an LSL event that was triggered when a box was purchased or something along those lines then the situation might be quite different. Until that happens I think vendors win hands down.

Anyway, I meant to say proposal... not that a proposal would work any better.

I sell things in boxes. I think it is cuter that way -- more of a "package". Vendors in the past have given me a headache -- I have never tried setting one up, but people have told me it's awful, and I don't really even want to try -- and I don't really enjoy using them either.
I have my boxes set up on shelves.

One other thought, for those of us who primarily use vendors, is that a 'single-prim per item' display beside your vendor can still be useful for featuring new products. That gives them better exposure, and allows you to track them individually... I may do that for my new line of Sarongs that I am about to introduce.

*grrr* Why does a useful thread like this only come up when the grid is down?! My fingers itch to experiment and see what happens when using both the vendor set up and the box set up!
Right now, I use a vendor set up because of prim limits, although if I decided to just box my fountain of the month decoration, I might have enough prims for both a nice shop and a few boxes outside of my vendors.

From: Sensual Casanova I am really considering getting rid of vendors and selling out of boxes... mainly to make things easier to view and unpack... My question is, how do you keep track of sales when you sell from boxes? Also which do you prefer, vendor or boxes? I prefer large items out of boxes, smaller items directly from the vendor.

Vendors for me, as both seller and customer. Boxes are extremely slow to load, as someone have said. It require giant malls to put all the stuffs that can be put into several well-catagorized vendors and still as easy to browse through. Vendors are much easier to copy and put around in many places as well, and take less prims in prim-limited space.
I like catagorized vendor with some thumbnails most. They're easy to browse through, take less time to load and rez, and no need for me to fly around the place just to see what they have to sell there. And, for me, it just as easy to set up.
For TRU mall, I've been there once, and they take like a forever to load all those textures. Well, the new place is better than the older one anyway. But what I'd like is that could it has just a simple 'map' at the front gate, telling me what are where? At the moment I have to fly around and wait everything to fully loaded just to see it's not what I looking for....would have gone elsewhere as well if I know any other place selling lots of textures.

Thank you, Dennis! Now if I can just re-connect after this update, so I can put the new Sarongs in my vendors! I seem "stuck in traffic" so far, as everyone rushes to return to the Grid. (But so far, no indications that it will fail completely... *crosses fingers*)
And Nargus, as you noted, you should find the new TRU Superstore is a lot better on lag issues. I could barely move in the old one, and in the new one I get decent frame rates even with a crummy video card. The new store is almost half a sim, and will be less densely packed, with larger display boxes. The rest of the sim is very low lag, too.
I'll ask LillyBeth about a department map to go at the entrance. The old store had teleporters near the entry, to take you to specific departments. The new one should as well, once it's fully set up.

Don't think it's wise to compare. Vendors were pretty much designed for prim limits, so mostly rental spots. Serious sellers are likely to own a reasonable sized piece of land.
There are bonuses to vendors like sales tracking, networking and the like though.

According to one of the entries in Lillybeth Filth's picks, there will be a new home vendor some time. The one you have won't work; you'll have to go to the store to get a new one. The single texture section upstairs in the store is using a new vendor system, not the JEVN/JENC hardware that they were previously using. I suspect that the new home vendor will be similar. The new singles vendors put a "SAMPLE" watermark over the texture when they display them, presumably to prevent people from stealing textures by taking screen snapshots.

I like the Cortex vendors for one reason only... it displays the permissions of the objects. This is one thing that most boxes lack. (and most vendors too)
I generally do not by ANYTHING non-copy I hate spending $L and then accidntally loosing the thing. With most boxes (and vendors), the permissions are rarely displayed and are usually just snapshots.
On those rare occasions where they have taken a screenshot, pulled it into pornoshop, added information and then uploaded as a new texture... those... I might buy from.
