Is Chess at the Welcome Area games building the best use of the space? I suspect not. Has anyone ever seen or participated in a complete chess game there?

There is not much use of any of the games at the WA game building, does anyone have any suggestions for games that might actually get some players?

Should there be some obvious seats around the games for spectators?

SuezanneC,

I play chess there often. I enjoy playing there because I can also talk to new people, and they get to see a very nifty object in action. Plus they get a nice ego boost watching how lousy I am at chess.

I've played there.

Though, it has a couple of bugs: no en passant and you can castle in check.

How many hours a day?

I have only seen two people trying to play once. I am online a lot. Of course you might be there when I am at work or sleeping and I would never know.

A handful of people that do play does not indicate that chess is the best game that could be there.

I suspect the game simon would be more popular, or something else less cerebral and faster paced, with a shorter playing time.

I never thought to clock my hours there....I'll do so this week and let you know next weekend.

And it seems we're looking at this very differently - it honestly never occured to me that it was important that a popular game be located there. I actually enjoy that the game center isn't swamped, as I certainly couldn't have discussions with 200 people playing tringo, whereas a curious straggler or two are very easy to talk with.

Is the chess table one of those objects that I have to walk around when I'm trying to get the hell out of the Welcome Area on my way to Lusk?

If so, I vote it be boosted into the space sim.

Merwan, Suzanne, Blaze,

The latest version of the chess table is available for free at the Chess club in Lemon and it does allow En Passant. Look for "chess club" in find or IM me in world and I'll give it via IM.

There's also a playable, not as prim-hungry board at the chess club, but it's not completely finished yet (and this one probably won't be free).

You'll also find a Tic Tac Toe and a Sudoku board, both working. :)

That's the spirit! Let's dumb down SL even more. I faill to see the impact on your quality of life that powers in charge place a chess board there.
I am not a chess player my self but I have seen people using it.

I think the idea would be to give new rezidents something easy, quick and fun to engage themselves in. Something with mass appeal that they could get right into. While Chess is a fine game, I don't know that it accomplishes this. That doesn't mean the Chess board should be set on fire.

The Rock, Paper Scissors HUD game would be fun for people. Creates interaction. Sufficiently dumbed down for the average player. Similarly for Tic Tac Toe.

Taco, I don't think flinging little Knights and Queens around at n00bs really can be considered playing chess.

That Chess board is one of the best coded and most complex piece of scripting in SL today. It's really a great display of what you can do with SL. You can get the free, open source, copy able version at many places in SL, and it's a great example to learn what a really complex piece of LSL can be.

It's very much at the right place at the welcome area. New arrivants will discover clubs and escorts soon enough, let's expose them early to higher stuff :).

You might want to ask the Luskites if you can join a group that owns land in Lusk for long enough to let you set your home spot to the group owned land. You can quit the group, and your home spot will stay the same.

I wonder if P2P teleport will help this any.

Maybe people or groups should be abe to designate their parcels as "available to be home spots"?

How many games have you seen played from beginning to end?

I didn't make any claim that my life quality was reduced by having chess be the game occupying the space there.

One might think that purpose of the games at the Linden provided Welcome Area should not be to delight those who are aleady committed to Second Life, but rather to increase the retention rate, which might be better done with a game other than chess.

A great display of what you can do with respect to chess in SL would deal properly with en passant and castling in check, would it not?

The assumption you're making seems to be that if chess isn't actively being played by new people (which, btw, is untrue, I play new people there often), it is failing to attract new people to SL. I think this assumption is flawed, as I have been asked by new people "wow, somebody really built this?" - it's a workable, interactive example of complex programming.

How many a day? Have you ever heard someone at the fountain area ask what there is to do in SL and someone says, well, there's chess in the game building?

Without looking, what other games are there in the game room?

The Prim Attack game was in frequent use back in the old days, I hardly see or hear it in use now.

If the version of chess at the welcome area does not do en passant correctly, but there is an upgraded vesion that does, then for gosh sakes the one at the welcome area need to be upgraded. Now!

I suggest that blaze be put on this task.
