I asked this in another thread but it got buried in the topic so it's crossposted here because I'm really curious about it.

If we can tell a client to render text across an attached prim face, why can't we do that with any prim and transmit the settings to all the clients in the area? In other words, if the client is capable of rendering text across a HUD, why can't it render text across any prim face that's visible?

Because we can't render text to an attached prim face.

The best you can do is llSetText, which renders the text above the prim. Then you cheat a little, make the prim transparent, and move it down so that the text appears to be on a prim.

But this only works in the HUD. In non-HUD'ded prims, the text is always parallel to your display and is the same size on your screen, so it appears to rotate around and resize compared to the world around it.

You can render text on a prim with XyText.

Also, I hope Strife and I can finally demonstrate TLTP in SL soon (my replacement computer is still late :()

The quicktime viewer can render text, just assign the url of a text file as if it was a movie stream and the text will show in place of a movie. The test can be changed in size and font and color using some quicktime text control language. It has been several months since I did this, I don't recall the details at the time, but it did a great job of displaying scrolling Prokofy forum posts.

As with any other quicktime media we display you have to be on the parcel to see it and only one display on a parcel at a time. This makes it not real useful for most applications.
