In the wake of the post I posted yesterday, I did a very rough estimation that the time spent by the predominantly american population wasting their time reading and replying to it. It costed an approximate 10,000 USD. Here are the estimations.

600 views within a five hour span before it was closed for review. I'm assuming maybe 100 out of the 600 are either non-americans or just non productive, unemployed americans. So 500 hits.

Assuming an average person spending about half an hour reading and returning to it to read replies and lurking around. Also includes the requisite cliched parody post started by one of the posters.

This was happening during the morning. Many of the posters were posting or reading but not inworld. I know its a holiday, but it happens during workdays too.

Assuming also an average loss of productivity is around 50USD an hour, inclusive of wages, utility bills, rental and general overhead borne by the employer and the loss in potentially profitable and billable work.

So 500 x 50USD x 0.5hour = 12,500 USD.
I'll minus away 2,500 USD to be a bit conservative.

That results in 10,000 USD wasted!

I do hope that some find it entertaining and it was well worth it. I guess for a country full of excess, 10k is merely a speck of sand in a vast desert. But very likely the Lindens find that moderating and maintaining a general forum full of crap is a non-productive and non-profitable effort and those who participate are merely a small fraction of their customer base. Money best spent elsewhere.

Thats why we have the slave labour resmods to do the dirty work.

Long live the fake japanese.

Except that you posted it on a holiday. :D

Nah, he already said it was a holiday... I was just pointing out that all his "But it happens on workdays" bit was a strawman in this case.

A little note: the 500 figure would be way overstated. Each of us who posted on that thread might have visited it 10 or more times each, each post by itself counts as 2 hits. That is, many of the 600 views were repeat views.

I think a more believable figure for unique people (read: people who actually spent time reading) on that thread would be like 50-70.

Yeah. If you reread it every half an hour or so, it doesn't matter if you're unique or not. Same cumulative amount of time spent. Anyway, don't prove me right by reposting over and over all morning.

Why would someone re-read it? Reading an individual post takes seconds, and all you need to do is follow the new ones.

So you'll keep reposting to correct my semantics? Isn't that cool.

It's not like I've got anything better to do at the moment.

I note you don't seem to find any fault in your own posting.

The entire concept of "fake" Japanese is unusual.

Perhaps these people were Japanese in their past lives and were reborn non Japanese to punish them for their misdeeds..........

I don t know why anyone would be worried or upset. A lot of these residents are seeking something that is missing from their lives. They are learning to read and write Japanese also perhaps speak it as well. Why do they do it? Why not! This is Second Life where we can choose who we are and not to be told what to do. So some non Japanese want to be Japanese in Second Life? If you don't like it, well the right of association or lack is the rule here.

How about respecting all of the residents dreams and desires. If you don’t like something leave it alone and follow your own path to happy life.

That sounds a bit gay, but I get your point. I mean, happy gay. Not the butt banging gay.

First of all, it's evening here. And Reitsuki is right that one need only read the new posts, which for a relatively fast reader takes very little time, and for a fast typist, a response takes a minute or two.

And I'm already doing my time-wasting in an MMOG and dropping by the forums while waiting for my character to recover his points.

I'd accept the award and be honoured actually, if it was spelled correctly.
Anyway, I think the furries forest thread will be taking up peoples time today most of the morning.
