Sweet shit!

Yes. Adding a Physics Processing Unit to the sims would provide better physics. The downside is that to get the feedback from that you'd either need local clients with PPUs, or a gigabit connection to stream the data on that level. But computers will get there eventually. I'd be happy with FarCry physics if not HL2 physics. This is... next decade's stuff.

Fluid dynamics might be a bit much data, but I'm guessing that having them server-side would at least enable having many more physical prims with more accuracy. Basically the stuff that is possible today, only more accurate and with less lag. No reason it couldn't be both client-side and server-side though. I'd buy a physics card if it meant I could swim around in green slime :D

Um. You're kidding, right? Second Life with fluid simulation?

I'll believe that when I see it running in world. :D

PS: If you want to try something more convincing, Blender now handles fluid simulation.

Of course he's not kidding! Didn't you see the SL 2.0 Preview announcement?

Oh, that's right, you're not in the real FIC.

It could certainly be implemented client-side. Say you had a water gun, you could then have a prim that was a water source. This source would then have a certain amount of push that would push the water forward. Exactly how the water should move could be done client-side, while it could have a bouding box that would push objects server side so that if you fired your high-pressure water gun at a plywood cube it would move a bit.

Maybe this could be done by implementing Havox FX client-side, it utilizes the GPU for physics effects(the kind that would be appropriate to have client-side). I'm sure LL will implement something like this sometime around 2138, right after they're finished implementing Havok 3 on the servers

Pretty, and very fake. That's so obviously pre-rendered.

alternative to the divx codec, I recommend using the XviD codec. It will play divx better than divx will and it's free.

Methinks that was beside the point. :)

Very cool find, Tiger!

Why does this thread get to stay in General?

this thread has stayed in General because the conversation became a serious one about features and functions within SL, thereby turning this thread into one that fits the theme of the General forums.

if, given more time, it becomes an Off Topic conversation, then it will be moved accordingly. and no, a few off topic comments don't mean a thread needs to be moved.. there should be plenty of "wiggle room" for threads to thrive properly.

That is some giant wiggle room, considering the thread started off completely off topic anyway, as that is not video from SL. There is barely a single post in this entire thread that is actually about SL.

Cristiano, you're right that the original post was not about SL, but an aside of sorts that happened to mention SL.

there were following posts though that started discussing different technology and the pertinence to SL; therefore, what started as Off Topic, became on topic for General. i have left it here just in case the conversation strengthens in that vein.

i am well aware that some in the community are getting whiplash from the amount of threads being moved about, so i am trying a more active role in being passive.. if that makes any sense.

Is it just me - or is this the longest 2 weeks in recorded history?

Some (all recent?) versions of Quicktime can play DIVX too, since it's basically just MPEG4.

More PhysX demos (I prefer this fluid one):

EDIT: Aww, hell, may as well put a link to the Ageia vids page too:

while we are on topic, what is better for video editing, a mac or pc workstation? someone told me that macs are much better becaue they can use RAM more effectively. (that's about all the patience he had to explain to me the difference).

what if the pc was dual processor?

Man, Jeska's quick today.

I've used both and not really noticed a difference between the two. I'd guess that for the same money a PC would be better (especially if you don't mind running purely open source stuff), but I'm really just guessing.

The best bet for multiplatform Divx/Xvid/etc playback is likely using VLC. For Windows users who still would rather use WMP or WinAMP or whatever, check out DefilerPak for one of the best minimalist codec packs out there using FFDshow, which is a very good general purpose codec for XviD/DivX/other crap.

Anyway, who cares about 2.0! Have you seen the latest release notes?

Are there any real substances that act like those in the vid? They're like spongey donuts that... SPLASH. OMG, I'm so confused whether they're solids or liquids or what. :)

Tiger, thanks for coming back from the future to share this with us. ;)

You know what might be nifty? Combining a vid like that with current avatars walking around and exploring... like some avs that got lost in a wormhole and ended up in "the future of SL". Mixed reality? Up the ante with mixed virtual reality!

O boy...
