I have the technical ability to build a house but I don't have any design skills. Can someone point me to some pictures of good SL or RL houses for me to get some ideas from? Are there are good design tips about building houses in SL in the forum or some video tutorials? My house currently looks like a warehouse but I want to funk it up.

Just wander around lots of places in SL and study the builds. Try Damania for truly imaginitive builds - not suggesting you copy them but they might give you some ideas. Also look at show homes that are on sale to see what the competition is. I have some house designs on sale, designed for 512m plots. Unfortunately I don't have any set up as show homes.
It is also worth looking out for bad builds to get ideas about what to avoid - one common blooper is to texture whole objects, like tiled floor slabs, as one, so you get squeezed pattern on sides - texture individual faces separately for better results.
