this may be somewhere under a title I didn't think to look for but at this point I'm far from caring.
I've looked through tutorials, I've downloaded the scripts, all the options show up but every time I export a sculpt map, no matter what it is, the object is broken in some way.
I can render the sculpty map DIRECTLY AFTER MAKING A SPHERE MESH and it is still a messy recreation of a sphere, I have no clue if there's some kind of settings that are broken but I'm close to giving up on sculpties altogether if I can't get this fixed...
no matter where I look or what I try, it remains just broken enough to make anything I might export to SL worthless to me... and from what I can find this is in no way an issue for anyone else...

I'm going to make a guess, based on what I could discern from your problem, but really, more information or a link to an image would be more helpful in the future The number one mistake that content creators make when importing a sculpt map into second life, is forgetting to check the "use lossless compression" checkbox when uploading the image. That will lead to some pretty strange and unexpected distortion of your sculpt map. If that's not it, could you please post some more information? Thanks

there is one big issue with SL, which might let you fall into another trap: The map should contain 4096 pixels (32*32 faces) or 8192 pixels. Bigger maps force the Server to size down your maps and could mess up your mesh (not necessarily though). And smaller sizes simply can not be uploaded lossless.
Also check the correct sculptie type in the SL object editor, otherwise you will get ugly artefacts...
But all that is just guessing. As Fizz stated, an image would help a lot to answer your question...

well, as stated, it's not when uploading to SL, it's the image itself being exported from blender that somehow breaks, as I can immediately use the image I just rendered in blender and click "Import as sculpty" or whatever the option is, and it's already broken or incredibly lumpy

aha.. So:
- take your smooth and fine looking blender model (take the sphere for example) - then go to edit mode and ensure you see the edit button panel (F9) - Locate the Link and Materials tab - click on "Set Solid"
Now you see the object "lumpy" and with less resolution... Is it that what you mean ?
Now do in contrary:
- import image as sculptie - go to edit mode - in the Link and Materials Tab click on "Set Smooth"
Now the sculptie looks better ?
So if that is the case: No trouble here. What you see is:
set smooth: emulates SL-lighting(in fact "vertex-lighting" is the keyword here) set Solid: turns of vertex lighting and so you see each face and thus the surface looks rough and ugly.
Expect to see degradations though. The main problem is the limited spatial resolution of sculpties... (256 positions along each axis)
If you have another problem, an image would be great to answer your question...
