I am a noob so please forgive the probable FAQ.

I have been reading about the new area for themes and have read many of the thread. They are all interesting and I could actually get into some of them but after my one week in world I would like to post an observation about the game in general and these theme ideas specifically.

1. For the residents not involved in the actual building of the theme area (which would be fun) I can see about one visit to see the area and that is it. In other words. While it would be fun for people to actually build these area, it really is not all that interesting for people to just LOOK at them. I have gone from one end of the world to the other and seen all the neat buildings and ships. They were interesting for exactly ONE visit.

2. In order for a theme area to be successful in the larger sense I think you have to be able to DO SOMETHING at the area NOT JUST LOOK AT IT. This would suggest an area set aside for things like games,i.e Soccer fields, combat zone. more ball games and lots of activities that non-building residents (ultimately the vast majority of GA residents) would find interesting on an on-going basis.

I am sure this building vs activities debate has gone on many times in the past and I apologize in advance for bringing it up again if it has been beat to death in prior threads.

This is an interesting, different idea - I'd love to hear if anyone else might want to head in this direction.

I agree strongly with Sturm. Aesthetics get someone's attention, but activities are what keep them coming back.

From another place kinda like SL, I can tell you that rides -- amusement park rides, ferris wheels, carousels, tea cup rides, roller coasters -- and water rides -- river rides, white water rafting -- as well as activities like skiing, and even ice skating are the biggest attractions.

The potential in SL is tremendous -- look at bp's magic flying carpet, and Ysg's flying ship.

And whereas I don't play 'sports' kinda stuff myself, I know that Ben's games are attracting a good following.

Thanks -
Kerstin

Sturm congratulations, you're like Seinfeld, making a comment about something everyone thinks about but never consiously brings it up ;) This is actually the main reason why I make things that people will want to revisit. My first being a lighthouse, but that gets old (so it's a stupid spin script, booring) then I made a matrix box, with moving code, and construct simulation. This sorta works cuz you'll want to bring your new friend to see it, because I consider it a definite "Must Visit" attraction of Second Life :D
Now I've made Plinko, a fun game that people love to play (right? or is all that praise feigned? :p ) which gets moderate attention, and may even be put in the newbie spawn area for them to play with (Phillip actually said it was one of the first things he wanted to make in the game! *blushes*)
Now enough self-promotion, down to the nitty-gritty, which is Sturm is absolutely right. These places have to be fun to visit on multiple occasions. My way is to make games. Kerstin's way is to have trivia (and I'll be damned if that hasn't worked perfectly for her!) but for other people's themed communities, they may have to think up some other new way to bring in the peeps.
I openly admit that I actually avoid going to Lindenburg anymore! I bought a shoddy item from that place, it lags me to no end, and it's just a bunch of buildings nearby eachother! (No offense, I think what you guys have done with the place is great!) But it just doesn't make me want to go back.
It'll be interesting to see how this all pans out...

Oh I almost forgot! I'd love to help with the theme park (even though we already have one in-game, it leaves much to be desired).

Nice thread Sturm. I like your idea of a 'combat' arena - perhaps something like Paintball, or maybe a themed battle re-enactment area for history buffs???

Just thinking of the possibilities.
