Basic Prim Question

I am used to using 3d programs. I doing so I would often put two shaps togeather and cause one shape to cut out an area in the other shape (almost like a cookie cutter.) Can this be done in sconde life? For instance I make a hollow cube then I want the cut out a window in that cube. Could I just make another prim the shape of the window put it inside the cube then use (like in 3ds Max) a cutaway command to cause a opening to appear in the cube?

Unfortunately, no. Best you can do is a hollow prim using the preset square/circle/triangle hollowing and hope your desired shape is within the stretch parameters for that hollowed prim. The hollowed area will be proportional to the rest of the prim, in other words.

You *can* use another prim as the window in the hollowed area though. But SL doesn't do a cutaway like you describe.

if they added that feature we could build so so so much more... however i think all the different shape types would overload the server with lag now that i think about it

So you know, Jurgen, the term for what you're talking about is "boolean subtractions". LL has been talking about implementing boolean-like operations for a long time. It's a very requested feature.

As I understand it, it's a difficult thing to just throw into the existing system. The building engine is entirely additive. Subtractions would require a fairly major rewrite. It is definitely something they want to do, but don't hold your breath expecting to see it any time soon.
