I picked up this nice christmas tree somewhere. Built for the snowy sims I guess. Creator Eric LInden, owner me. Now I want to link the nice ornaments to it, and no dice....

So I looked through the creator - created a bunch of trees that I am creator - found a nice white bare tree... At least to try. Tried to link ornaments to that too. No dice....
What's the story with trees... Can't accept links?

I've read a bunch about linking and nobody said that some prims don't accept links...

Tried to move the balls to base of tree and link to fix distance limitations. Still no dice. No message, just doesn't work...

I hesitate to say that there is a bug in linking, since from my point of view, the whole concept of linking in SL is COMPETELY BROKEN... sorry... <flame off> whew....

Thanks,

ok just to clarify. Trees as in linden trees or trees as in you shaped prims to look like a tree?

Native linden trees...

What are they called??? Anyway the type of prims that are crossed planes......

BTW, I don't seem to be able to build those myself, with my own textures... Or edit the textures on the ones that I get from elsewhere. Some special privs required to edit these special things apparently... sigh... All these special rules... What a mess...

WW,

Yes, there is no linking trees, at least not the native Linden trees you can create as a single prim from the build menu.

I would have thought a fix might have been suggested by now, because it's really unhandy to have bunches of trees which you have to individually pick if you want to move them around. They won't link to each other, either; plus, you can't frame select trees if there are any normal prims around -- the normal prim will take precedence, and none of your trees will be selected. *edit* in fact, you simply can't frame select Linden trees.

Also, no, you can't make your own Linden trees, as they are not typical prims -- e.g. they 'plump up' into an actual few (phantom) prims when you get close, even though they'd been simply two planes with a tree texture on them when viewed from a distance.

All things to be worked on, I'd say.

You can make your own trees, but it will take two or three prims.

Draw a couple of tree projections as textures, making sure you have lots of transparency using an alpha channel, and upload as 32 bit tga. Then put them together so they at right angles to each other (if you have two) or with smaller angles (three or more).

They make use of the opengl bug where the display card can't make up its mind which layer to show and that gives them a 3 d effect.
