Very new to this and don't even know what questions to ask. I am looking for living room furniture and not liking what I see... So - if I want to try my hand at building some for myself, what software do you experts recommend for someone with no experience?
I have not worked with any 3-D program at all, so it would have to be super easy to handle. Thanks for any info, and if I am putting this in the wrong forum, let me know please.
A

A I recommend you use the in-world build tools. They are plenty sufficient to create a wide range of furniture--or any other non-organic shape for that matter. When you start getting into organic shapes, and sculpties, then you'll need an external 3rd party 3d application. If you want to be inspired by furniture, visit Maximum Minimum in-world. If you want custom work done, I can give you a quote. Cheers.

OK - I'll check it out - most I have built so far - like I said, so new at this, is a couple of lanterns, a bench and a basket. Well, I did do a nice little Tea House too. For whatever reason, I thought sofas and such would be complicated.

Amaranthim: If you want to build in Second Life, look up the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives via Search > Places. It's in the Natoma sim. When you get there, follow the tutorials, but I stress: Follow them in the correct order. They're laid out in a clockwise fashion if I recall correctly and once you complete a circuit you go up to the next floor and do the same again. Building in SL is actually quite easy once you know how, and the Ivory Tower is one of the most famous places to start learning.

Thank you so very much for the encouragement! That is the thing I love so much about SL – how folks are willing to share knowledge and encourage each other. If only RL was so user-friendly! I will look for that – thanks so much

If you are interested I have a box of freebies for new furniture builders on the deck outside my shop (Prim Pincher). It has some free poseballs in it that you can use to add poses to the stuff you build.
Have fun and good luck!

From: JessyAnne Theas Careful there darlin... any kind of "good" build will be complicated... I don't think this is necessarily true. Maximum Minimum (MM) is a great example of why you don't need 'complicated' to be 'good.' It's not healthy to equate the two words when dealing with design...it's actually quite unhealthy. In fact, the majority of my favorite furniture designers are minimalists--Herman Miller being one of them (MM has a lot of HM designs).

I'm all for minimalism. I think we are defining or using "complicated" in different terms of view.

Well - what I meant by complicated was the degree of difficulty associated with mastering the tools. I do not shy from effort.

Amarinthim, try visiting Cult Modern, Barnesworth Anubis, CORN, Maximum Mininum, Modern World, Luxe Minimalist ... You will see some very well-built furniture. You might also manage to discern by eye alone some very interesting techniques for creating key pieces. If this is too difficult for you, you could also purchase a couple of items, take them home, and break them apart to see what is going on. This is what I did. Most furniture are sold with mod rights and at very reasonable prices, so this is a possibility too. In essence, many furniture shapes could be achieved by some combination of box-cylinder-sphere or box-cylinder-torus. Good luck

Not sure I am comfortable with taken apart another's work - will have to think the balance ont hat one. I did not realize that the tools al;ready there may be adequate to the task. thanks - I will you guys know how it works out. Right now, a chair would be nice, a nice comfy chair....let me go try that out!

Hang in there. I am sure you will do great. Making your own stuff is very satisfying and a big part of the fun of SL.

Amar, I'm going to agree with you. At the moment, I build swords and have gotten a lot of compliments about my builds (No, they're not for sale - yet)... I tried my hand at a brazier for a friend's home - great. Then, a chair.... O... M... G! It was horrible! Furniture is more difficult than it looks.
