You'll know I'm a newcomer, but I've been studying prims and textures intensively and cannot find the solution to this challenge. I want to create and use plain white lattice in construction. If I criss-cross all those small boards as individual prims I will use a tremendous number of prims. Is there some way to create a white lattice which doesn't use so many prims, and in which the background can be seen through the holes in the lattice?

Thanks for any help.

Take a look at the "Wood Lattice" in the Library. It isn't white, but perhaps you could use it to create the same texture (only white) in Photoshop or whatever graphics program you use.

If the one in the library isn't what you want, you should be able to find a texture that does what you need at most of the major texture stores. I'd usually look first at Textures'R'Us, but there are several that are nearly as good. If you don't want to spend any money, try Jane's Textures, a huge collection of free textures and fairly well organised. Don't know if she's got a white lattice, but I'd be surprised if she didn't.

You could also create a lattice with sculpted prims. Modelling from a 16x16 mesh will give you a somewhat LOD resistant "comb" of 16 prongs. Intersecting two of these would give you a lattice with 2 prims. (see attached) With some clever modelling you could probably fit them into a rectangular frame in a diagonal fashion also...

BUT.. I'm gonna have to say your best bet here is probably an alpha texture. A texture is likely to look much better at distance, since you get antialiasing for free with a texture - but most people are probably not going to have a high antialiasing level set for geometry in SL. SL runs slow enough as it is :D

As much as I hate the "flat" look of alpha textures, i think they are the appropriate tool in this case.

I have a couple of lattice textures, other than the one in the library. IM me in-world, I'll send them to you.

Thank you all very much! I'll look into the possibilities you've suggested.

Sue, I'll IM you when I get into SL later today. It's very kind of you to share.
