Am I missing something ??? When a prim is rotated out of the 90 deg plane, say to 110 deg, I switch to 'local' reference to move it and adjust its position. Thiis all well and good when dragging it with the arrows, but is seems that if I adjust using the 'edit' window the X/Y/Z still move the thing by the 'world' axis. I get the uneasy feeling that I'm missing something obvious ! Help ???

The numbers are ALWAYS oriented to the world, just as they should be. If you've rotated something by 90 degrees, it's been rotated by 90 degrees. There's no other way to define it. If you want to go another 90 from there, set it to 180.

The World, Local, and Reference settings are just for the on-screen manipulator tools and grid. What you might find helpful is to make use of the reference grid. Rotate a prim to the orientation you want and then press shift-G (with the chat bar closed, of course). The manipulator and grid will then orient exactly to that prim. As long as you have Use Grid checked, you'll then be able to see lots of visual clues about how to orient other prims against the reference prim. You'll be able to snap prims in increments of the rotation, size, and location of the reference. It's really handy.

If you'd rather work strictly by the numbers though, then all the math will always be in relation to World 0,0,0.
