Hey all,
Pls excuse me for being a newb but here goes...
I'm a newb to building, but I'm writing this post to get some advice! What I'm looking for are tips to make sure that I don't leave my structures susceptible to being edited, destroyed or vandalized by anyone. I know just the basics of construction, enough to put up 4 walls and a roof hehe. Anyway I am open for ANY advice at this point...any pointers, tips, hints, clues, shortcuts and the like. Should I be locking every piece of my property? Also how do I setup a video screen? (yes I got the audio ulr to work hehe). How can I make a simple door script? Also, is it possible to lockout a room (my personal living area) to keep people out while the rest of my property remains public? And what are the major differences between PG or Mature property? Pls advise anyone... and thanks in advance.

From: Vermilion Kilian Hey all,
Pls excuse me for being a newb but here goes...
I'm a newb to building, but I'm writing this post to get some advice! What I'm looking for are tips to make sure that I don't leave my structures susceptible to being edited, destroyed or vandalized by anyone. ~VK~ Vandalism: No one else can edit your stuff, with only a few exceptions where you allow them to. Also, if you just set your land to return other people's stuff in a few minutes, graffiti and vandalism gets wiped away. From: Vermilion Kilian Should I be locking every piece of my property? Also how do I setup a video screen? (yes I got the audio ulr to work hehe). I'm not sure what you mean by locking up property... Video screen: /15/81/41140/1.html That's freevid, an excellent program by Hiro Pendragon. I would test it, but I am landless From: Vermilion Kilian How can I make a simple door script? Sliding door? Check out the volumedetect door innabox... It has a nice sliding door effect. Mainly, it's just an llSetPos(), with a bit of glue in between. From: Vermilion Kilian Also, is it possible to lockout a room (my personal living area) to keep people out while the rest of my property remains public? The private room is a bit harder... But if you have more than 512m^2, you can subdivide it into multiple plots, and you can then have one of them bounce people away. If you don't want to do that, there are a few other ways to manage it. First, you could make something that would push them away if it entered a certain bounding box (sensor/volumedetect). Otherwise, you could just try and build it higher than you can fly, and then use a teleporter. People don't usually wander into buildings 300m up. From: Vermilion Kilian what are the major differences between PG or Mature property? PG and Mature is pretty basic... In PG land, restrict content to things that you would see in a PG movie. In Mature land, anything goes, including nudity and sex. Choose your land appropriately. I hope all this information has helped Vermilion, and if you'd like to see some of this stuff implemented, drop me a message. I can script the things I just described. Enjoy your Second Life.

From: Vermilion Kilian Also, is it possible to lockout a room (my personal living area) to keep people out while the rest of my property remains public? There's another option for doing this...I have several floors to my home, and wanted the top floor to be able to be closed off sometimes. A neighbor of mine who's a scripting wiz made me a cool system whereby the doors and windows to that level are covered by doors and opaque panels (which I textured like stained glass) which are all linked. The doors all rez or de-rez when I click a button. (I keep the button concealed.) When de-rezzed, the doors and windows can be used like normal; when I click the button and they rez, no one can get in or look in, without using the usual camera tricks. If you're interested in having something like this done, just IM me in world and I'll pass on the scripter's name-- it escapes me at the moment.

Awesome technique Ilianexsi ..... Kek (from above post) came and helped me by getting that script written for me! now I can be secure in my public business hehe.
Ok next question, how do I make (1) walls the are pass thru but solid in appearance? (2) Walls that are solid but work like 1-way glass? (can see out, but not is).
Tks again!

If you want a wall that looks solid, but that you can walk through, just go into edit, to the object tab, and set the prim to 'phantom.' There should be a check box for this at the top. One thing I've learned from experience-- the phantom wall should NOT be linked to any others, or they'll all become phantom as well. As far as the 1-way glass, I've had some luck with putting a 'totally clear' texture (that's what mine is named) on one side of a prim and a regular texture of some sort on the other.

Vermilion If you havent had your video question answered yet, you dont have to use a script that lets you watch videos, they really only come in handy for keeping multiple movies in a bookmark of sorts, and letting you choose which one to use. They also help by basically pushing the play button for all those watching on your land for you, so you dont have to say "ok, 3,2,1 push play now!" lol. Simply go into "about land" , go to the media tab, click on the texture box and pick a texture you want to use as your video screen. Put a URL address in the video textbox that you want to view. Now go back to edit, make a prim to serve as your video screen, texture it with that same texture mentioned above. Now push play and you're watchin video Unfortunately for me, everytime a video starts I crash I have yet to figure out why.

From: Vermilion Kilian Hey all,
Should I be locking every piece of my property? ~VK~ It is a good idea to lock down after you have finished, there is a box in 'Edit' on the 'Object' tab. That will prevent you from accidentally moving what you have labored so hard to create!
