Hi guys,
I'm currently looking for land, ideally by the water for a small castle somewhere on the mainland (looking for about 1024).
It seems finding something right by the water will be difficult, but possibly I can find something near the water (1 or 2 parcels away) where I'll have a water view from my windows in my castle.
Does it make sense to build (or terraform) some kind of mountain so that I can place my castle at the top and that way I'd see over any buildings below and have a nice view?
Is there a limit in the mountain height?
Any feedback and ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

mainland terraforming in most cases is limited to -/+ 10 meters, but its likely you wouldn't know if the land is at it's max height until you buy either. Some rare places offer -/+ 40 and very very rare -/+ 100.
the alternative is using prims, sculpties would be best, but you'll have to stay away from megaprims, someone may complain, then its a waste of time, you would end up with a floating castle, which is probably your best option, so make a flat mountain effect plateau and place your castle on that, stick it at just above the cloud line and it could even look like its peaking through the clouds.
you will also have to have a small castle, 234 prims on 1024 meters is probably just doable with a prims left over for furniture.

Thanks for the reply! So would I just use the building tools to make this plateau? Sounds like I can make this go quite high

plus or minus 4 meters is the general rule for mainland terraforming, and also for most private estates (although the estate owner can set this, and may be willing to actually help you build an interesting landscape).
A 1024 parcel is really too small for any sort of mountain, especially with its base at sea level. I built a small mountain on FairChang Brisas...I think it's still there. It's on a 4096 parcel in the corner of the sim. The terraforming there was +/- 6m.
Megaprims are the way to go to build terrain beyond the terraforming limits. Twist and deform and texture them and they can make quite realistic cliffs and boulders. Sculpties can look exceptionally realistic, and there is a gadget for making them easily, called "The Rock Wizard". However, there are the usual problems with physical sculpties...if you expect to climb your mountain, you'll need extra invisible ramps and so on to walk on.

A 1024 parcel is roughly 32m x 32m in size (it can vary, but that is the normal dimension.) So you *could* take a 20x20x20 mega prim and use a sculpty rock texture to create a few rocks to "manufacture" your own mountain. Just be careful of the bounding boxes when you place the castle on top otherwise you'll be walking a couple of m off your floor Smarter choice would be to use standard prims for your very top rock layer to avoid this problem -- alternate solution: make all your "rock" prims phantom and build a platform for the castle out of regular prims (or a 20x20x.5 mega prim.) You could probably create a small mountain with around 10 prims. If you were going to be sky based, you would want to think about the same thing, just build out your mountain at around 280m up to get over the top of the cloud layer. If you were less interested in working with the cloud layer, you can go as high as 4096m.
