Quick vehicle construction question. I started laying out prims for a fairly detailed fighter jet and when it was almost time for that all important trial run, SL tells me you can't enable physics on objects containing more than 31 prims? is there a way around this?

Make some of the prims an attachment on the pilot. In the extreme you can make the whole jet an attachment and the plane just a plank with scripts in it. Of course that doesn't leave you with the feel of having a fighter jet... so the only real solution is to get your plane below the prim limits.

The physics limit is 31 prims, and Argent points out, you *can* attach a high-prim model to your avatar and sit on an invisible plane, but it's really not as fun as having an actual vehicle.
Also, remember that SL treats each seated avatar as 1 prim. So the simple formula is 31 minus the number of avatars. Example: If you have a pilot seat and two passenger seats, make your vehicle 28 prims.

thanks for the quick response. I guess i'll have to make it an attachment then...going to be one hell of an attachment, but oh well. The vehicle i am trying to make is an F-14B "Tomcat" Fighter jet, which is by no means a low detail or low prim. It should be pretty nice when it's done, although texturing the beast will take me ungodly long. That said, the feel should be relatively easy to do if I can tweak out the script properly (which i have an unrivaled feeling of dread towards) since you actually sit inside it. Oh well. either way, thanks for the input guys.

Hey Vectron I am doing the same thing... working on a Tomcat. So far I have gotten everything but the wheels and the two trim fins under the engines done. You are right it is a beast trying to keep it below 31 prims (with 2 ppl inside). I really wish they would change something in the programming to allow for more prims, though the idea of attachments would pick up the slack on things like missiles and fuel tanks.
Comparing notes here... what are you doing about the variable geometry? and the canopy? Those are my next tasks this evening is to get those functioning on command.
I have my rl/sl girlfriend looking for various textures I can use for it as well.
If you want IM me in world and we can compare notes on it.
Good luck with yours! Could not have picked a better jet to model! I just hope this sucker FLIES! I already have a RIO lined up too lol... I told him I have to call him Merlin. lol lol lol
