In other various 3D software you can assign individual textures to the faces of objects, as in a 6-sided cube with a different texture on each face. Is this possible when building?

yes, just click the texture button and then the face you want to texture. Until you go to a different mode you will only be operating on that face's color/texture attributes.

Welcome, Tod.

Yes, it is possible.

Method 1 (simple, less control, more repetition) Drag and drop the texture from inventory to the face you want it to go onto. The engine will automagically paint the texture onto that surface at the current repetition settings.

Method 2 (A little more fiddly, more control, less repetition) If you have several textures you want to paint with the same texture, across a single or multiple prims or objects, this is the method you will want o get familiar with.
Open the edit window on any prim/object. Check "Select Texture" click on the first face you want to paint with a particular texture. Shift click on any additional faces you may want to paint. Add your texture in the usual way (On the texture tab, click on the texture window, select texture from the inventory list shown...)
Voila! All selected faces have the texture you selected.

Sure. When in edit mode, choose the "select texture" radio button, and then click on the surfaces that you wish to texture.

I've got nothing to add since the question has been well answered already, but I did want to point out some cool creepy facts about this thread.

1. There were three answers all in the same minute, which has got to be a new record.

2. The original poster has 69 in his name, which is divisible by three.

3. The time of the three answers was 3:03 SL time.

4. If you add up the digits of the time of the original post, 2:56, you get 13, which has a 3 at the end.

5. I'm in the Eastern time zone, which means I see the times written as 3 hours later.

6. Here's the kicker. It's a departure from all the 3's but it still makes creepy sense. Since I see the time of the original post as 5:56, I can add up those digits and get 16. If I add the digits again, I get 7. The three responses appeared 7 minutes after the original post.

EDIT: 7. Whoa! I swear on my life I didn't plan this, but my response is time stamped at 4:23 SL time (ending in 3, and adds up to 9, which is 3x3), or 7:23 my time (begins with 7 and ends with 3, and adds up to 12, which adds up to 3).
