1.6 Link Problem

I haven't been able to link anything since installing 1.6. I sent email to SL support on April 9 and April 17. I haven't gotten a reply to either of them.

The principal reason I came from There to SL was because I loved building in SL. Now, I'm getting close to selling my land and giving up on SL. It's not only the linking problem, but the fact that SL apparently doesn't care.

Does anyone know of anything that's changed under 1.6 that would cause this problem, and how I might be able to resolve it?

Linking problems

I am a complete non-techie, so I can't give you any pointers about this from a technical point of view. Having said that, my intuition tells me that it is the new edit linked prims change that has caused a problem with linking.

I am finding it difficult to link on some occasions and not on others, and sometimes, difficult to link in some locations and not in others. It is worth conducting a few experiments to see if this is the same for you. You can take as one piece something which you haven't been able to link, by selecting one prim, shift selecting the others and then choosing take. I usually rename the collective object in my inventory so I know it is taken as one piece but unlinked.

Then go somewhere else - I find the Ivory Tower Sandbox in Natoma is a good place to go. It is usually quiet and has a lot of space. Get out your object and try linking it there.

If you still fail to link, report it, and try to stay sane. I have no doubt they will have to solve this bug sooner rather than later. I have always been rubbish at linking big things together and so I may be able to help with workarounds if you IM me in world. You really don't need to link big objects unless you plan to move them or sell them.

Caliandris-
I am a techie, and in the past I've been good at linking large objects, but since 1.6 I can't even create two simple cubes and link them.

It apparently does no good to report the problem. I sent emails to support on April 9th and 17th. Neither one got a reply (other than the automatic receipt confirmation).

Check to make sure the edit individual checkbox in the edit window isn't active. If it is, you can't delete or link objects. (Or something like that...)

make sure you dont have the Edit Linked Parts clicked, that prevents a lot of things being done

Nope, the edit linked part box isn't checked. I've just logged on to verify it.

I tried going to to the Ivory Tower public sandbox in Natoma, but the same thing happened - I could create objects but not link them.

Has anything about how objects are linked changed since 1.6 that would cause this?

The main reason I joined SL was for it's great building possibilities. After a year of building, suddenly I can't build, and now I'm starting to ask myself why I'm paying monthly land use fees for land I can't build on. This is getting very frustrating.

The only thing I have noticed that is different, before 1.6 I just right cliked the first prim and then held down shift while i cliked the others to be able to link.

Now with 1.6 I have to enter the "edit" mode and then hold shift and clik on the others.

Meaning 1.5 and earlier just clicking was enuff on first prim, in 1.6 you have to click and choose "edit".

I have answered a lot of these calls in Live Help, but eventually they are able to link.

Pituca-
Thank you! That was probably the one thing I hadn't tried. I logged on just now and tried it. It worked.

I just wish that SL would inform us of "little" changes like this, or at least had replied to one of my emails with this information. I can't be the first person to have this problem.

Thanks again!

Hawk that is great! I don't really think that it was a change. I was told by someone (don't remember who) that we were always meant to link the way we must now in 1.6. That the "just clik" method that worked for you and me (and many others) before was an anomaly.

Who knows, I know I stuggled for days too trying to link before stumbling on the "choose edit".
