Are custom characters from other games exporatable to Second Life? e.g., are the freely available ones from, say, http://polycount.com, compatible with SecondLife? To what extent or what adjustments would need to be made for successful import?

Except for textures, everything in SL is made inworld. If you want an avatar that looks like one from your link you'll need to make it or hire someone to make it for you. There is no way to import one from elsewhere.

In-world only building

Is this a concious decision on the part of Linden Labs, or is this a "We haven't gotten around to building an out-of-world modeler yet" thing? As in, should we expect one to be available sometime, or are we stuck with what we have?
I will admit that the modeler in-world is pretty nice, but maybe I just haven't gotten used to it yet, but it doesn't seem the most efficient way of doing things. For the kinds of things I'd like to build, I'd almost rather just build the prims and group them in an XML file (or similar) and import them. I find editing and duplicating and playing around in vi to be far more natural than the inprecice GUI they've given us. (But, hey, I'll admit that I'm a freak.. ![]() |

Look up Jeffrey Gomez in the forums here and search for his Prim Importer script. It's turns wavefront .OBJ files to SL based prims. A little tricky but I got it to import a geodesic (sp?) dome i made in Cinema4D ![]() _____________________
