Removing one prim from linked multi-prim object?

I thought I understood prims and linking, but I'm unpleasantly surprised to learn that apparently it isn't possible to remove ("take" or delete) a prim from an object consisting of many linked prims.

Can it be true that to remove one pillow from a boat which consists of 54 prims that I have to unlink the entire boat? (Which means going back afterwards to highlight each prim again in order to link the boat.)

I thought I could just use "edit linked prim" to highlight an individual linked prim and then delete it.

Thank you for information on this point.

It's a two step job. Select the linked prim like you tried, then unlink that prim. After that you can delete it.

But am I right in thinking that if you remove the ROOT prim in this way it will unlink all the objects?

No, officially, but subject to how SL is working will depend on the whole linkset becoming unlinked.

Normally unlinking the root will cause the last prim in the linkset prior to the root prim being linked becoming the root prim.

Every time you do this, all the rules for linking are re-evaluated, and if you don't have enough stuff to hold the link set together it will unlink. It doesn't have to be the root prim, just any prim that happens to be necessary to meet the rules. Flieger was trying out adding a seat to an already linked boat, so this was one of the "safer" cases =)
