Noob Question: How do I build a house?

I bought my first land, but I can't for the 'second' life of me figure out how to build a house or store front. Can anyone point me to any websites or forum threads that can explain the basics of putting a roof over my head?

Thanks!

Honestly, your best bet, if you have absolutely no idea what to do when starting to build your house, is to use the Find menu. On the Events tab, there should be a drop down list for various event categories, and if you'll pick Education from that list, you should be able to find many places that offer regular tutorials and classes in building and scripting in SL.

Not sure about now, cause I haven't gone to see them lately, but the folks over at Teazer's Isle were/are an invaluable resource for those looking to learn to build.

Or, you could probably just ask your neighbor -- my guess is they have something built on their land, and should be able to guide you through your first build :)

Good luck :)

Just unbox it...

The simplest way to build a small shelter is to unbox a prefab. There are many available in-world, including one that I designed. About all you have to do is drag the house from your inventory, just like any object you rez in-world, and there it is! You can then use the Edit tools to move and/or rotate it if necessary.

Look up The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives in Find. It's an in-world building tutorial, and will get you well on the way.

One of the most fun things in this "game" is to watch a builder at work-I watched this person put together a 3 prim storefront in a couple of minutes using some neat tricks.

They got a cube, hollowed it out and put another cube "a triangle" on top and had something functional........

But to get a feel for building a house and all, you probably wanna play with some prebuilts.

At these various garage sales and in many malls and stores you can find some freebies or next to free 1-3L "bags" of things, and a common bag is some free houses.

These free prebuilt houses you can just remove from your inventory and put on the ground, and presto you have a house!

Most of the freebies I've run across are copyable and modable so you can dissect them and play with them and it helps in learning how to build and put things together.

Best way is to learn by looking at examples. First, look up the "Ivory Tower" in find and visit then previously mentioned Ivory Tower Library of Primitives for a quick starter course in building. Then...

There's a big box of free houses at the Coonspiracy Store, just click on it and you'll get a folder full of good stuff. Or, go visit Yadni's Junkyard (enter that into "find places";) and buy a few of his L$1 boxes of houses (which is where where the ones in our freebie box came from).

Pull one out, right click on it, select "edit", and take it apart. Then put it together again, different... pretty soon you'll be doing it from scratch on your own...

Small houses
05-06-2006 02:30
Hello All

I went to Yadni's and got a bargain box with two small houses which look great. The only problem is that I am not sure if they are small enough. They appear to go over my boundaries. I have a 512 plot. I don't want to get in trouble with the neighbours so I have taken the house down until I can work out what to do. The other thing that occured to me is that I might not have positioned them correctly. I seem to have some problems flying around, mainly due to time lag.

Can anyone help me with some advice?

Many thanks

Go to the top menu, and select View/Property Lines. You'll be able to see the boundaries cleared than if you can using About Land. I'll try and catch you inworld when you're online, and if you're still having problems I'll come and have a look. You can get ARed for going over into someone else's land, but it would be nice to think they'd try IMing you first before that did that.

Look out your window and look at the first building you see. Try to see what basic shapes make up the building. Walls are squares, cubes, rectangles, while a roof would be a triangle. Round towers are cylinders, and so forth. Start putting together prims (building a house uses mostly cubes, I've noticed) and assembling them appropriately.

Otherwise, remember that the Grid is your best buddy. Abuse it like you own it.

My first prefab and i am hooked...

Disecting a house is the way to go. I thought I was smart , I had three freebie one room cabins in my inventory, so thought to self, self you can have a three room home for free! just knock a few walls down and whala' done. Hehe , ya right. I kept getting into it and next thing i know I have my roomy house and about only thing orginal from the freebie cabins are the roofs! I had a blast and learned alot, and I also learned that I need to learn more but I own my first "cute" prefab. Now i am looking to learn more about building homes and designing them.. I am hooked now, just reel me in.
