Video capture software for modelling tutorials?

I've considered throwing together a video tutorial on my methods of modelling with Wings, but I'm at a loss for a good way to capture the action and get it up on Youtube or some other site without it looking completely illegible. I've tried the free CamStudio, but it doesn't seem to capture fast enough to work well when I rotate the model around. Is there a good (preferably cheap) desktop video recorder you might recommend?

Fraps is only $37 to buy, free to try. It works great. Give it a whirl.

I'd heard of fraps but for some reason was under the impression it was only for full screen games? Does it capture the desktop?

Hmm. I had thought there was a way to get it to capture the entire desktop, but playing with it now, it only seems to want to capture what's in the active viewer port. At least that's how it's behaving for Maya. No reason to think it would be any different with Wings, I guess.

Sorry about that.

EDIT: Here's a quick list I just found. Maybe try out some of the demos. http://all-streaming-media.com/record-video-stream/screen-capture-software.htm

Camtasia Studio is a built specifically for recording the desktop for a 'screencast'. I've just given it a try and it's very easy to use and offers up some useful features. There's a free trial as well.

I sure hope you follow through on this, DanielFox. With the impending arrival of lossless coded sculpties in the official viewer, there is going to be a new surge of interest in other-than-organic sculpties. You've mastered the art of the "folded" sculpty better than anyone else I've seen. Great work!:)

I don't know if I can beat Aminom Marvin as King of Sculpties just yet... :D

Of course I exclusively use your excellent Wings import/export plugin, for which I cannot thank you enough. When I heard I could make sculpties with Wings, I was ecstatic. Then I was sad when all my sculpties got horribly messed up by jpeg2000. But now I'm happy again!

There are a few minor "wants" I have with the plugin that would make a very smooth workflow between Wings and Photoshop and back arbitrarily, which is a little tricky to manage as the plugin works now. Maybe we could discuss it if you're interested in my feedback.

Fraps seems to capture the Wings window okay, but the sound is completely out of sync. Probably again due to Wings not having a constant framerate. :(

Absolutely. I can't make any promises about delivery schedules, but I'm continuing to play with Wings and think about ways to improve it for sculpties.

If you want, you can send me a PM. But I would be inclined to start a new public thread here. That would serve a dual purpose -- teaching others your techniques as well as gathering more feedback on new extensions.
