I have recently been making oblong sculpts with great succuss using 8x128x0 oblong meshes in Blender, using the information posted by Domino Mamara here:
/8/60/203571/22.html#post2238500

Now I am trying to make one with a 4x64x0 mesh, keeping the mesh fairly evenly spaced. The sculpt is of a bike chain made from a cylinder mesh. The mesh in blender was scaled to .3x.3x 20 Blender units. When I upload it to SL, the preview looks ok, but since it cannot be resize narrow to see the actual size, I uploaded the sculpt as a temp using the Emerald viewer. The result once resized looks some what distorted, particularly the ends, but has the general useable shape of the intended sculpt. I then uploaded it normally the next day and found before I even resized it, it is all distorted.

What is the actual smallest, longest oblong mesh that is possible without major distortion?

from my experiments all oblongs with 1024 faces work with precise results (any ratios). All smaller meshes get more distorted where the rule of thumb is: lesser mesh sizes get more distortions. this is a known bug where it seems to be unclear if it is a viewer problem, a server problem or both ...

What size is your 4x... mesh that you got precise results? I cannot seem to get a precise result. I will try making the chain with a 64x4 torus and see how that works out. It will be harder to make, but will have no ends to join and distort.

I just uploaded my 4x64 mesh chain sculpt and it is totally not working in the upload preview window:(

I just uploaded a 4*256 faces mesh. Its size is 8*512 pixels. I made 8 LOD invariant Cubes with it.

256 is too many faces to work with for this sculpt. My mesh was 64x4 and my map was 8x128. I don't know how to make different LOD variants. My sculpt has to be very narrow, .014 Y inworld.

What multirez level will work right for a 64x4 mesh?...btw I did it that way cus I am using a torus and that sets the mesh they way I need it.

Your best option would be:

X-Faces: 32
Y-Faces: 2
Subdivision levels: 1

With that setting you get the mesh size you want and you get 2 LOD levels in X while you get a full LOD invariance in Y (since that is the minmum facecount allowed, hence the viewer will display 4 faces at ALL LOD levels ;-)

You also could work without any Multires, then you woud enter:

X-Faces: 64
Y-Faces: 4
Subdivision levels: 0

And again end up with the sculptmesh you need.

This is how I did my last attempt using a cylinder mesh, which resulted in a mess in the upload preview, so I did not even try to upload it. If this is supposed to work, something must be wrong.

I am now trying with a torus of 8x64x0. If this does not work I will try your recommendation of 32x2x1. If this also does not work, something must be wrong somewhere. I have Blender 1.49 installed and have Domino's RC scripts.

Crosses fingers..and everything else lol

UPDATE:
I tried a test with the 32x2x1 mesh using a torus mesh. The mesh looks like a round flat ribbon. I was suspicious if this would give me what I need so, I continued to make my sculpt, baked it on a 64x4 map and attemped to upload to SL. In the upload preview it is again a mess. As a test I also tried LL viewer and the result is still a mess as it is in the Emerald viewer upload preview....is something wrong? Am I doing something wrong?

Maybe provide a .blend file again ?
