Clearly not as easy as it seems. So how exactly DOES one upload an object, say a simple heart? I went through File - Upload - Upload Image. Paid the 10L and it's a texture. Peachy. So I tried putting it in an object and gives me this thing that looks like a paper airplane.
Can't get the thing to work - Any ideas?

Can't get the thing to work - Any ideas? You can't really upload an object. For the most part, objects have to be constructed in world. You can upload a map that would describe an object's shape. This is called a sculpt map and is used to create sculpted objects. This "map" is really just a special texture that defines the shape of the object. Search the wiki for "sculpted prim". Other than these specialized types of prim, all other objects must be created within SL. Hope this helps, Doug

New as of May 2007?.. So SL had nothing before then? Funky. Gonna have to try later, the wiki isn't loading.

Nope. Sculpties are barely a year old, and flexi prims are about a year older than that. Technology marches on and each new wave of residents wonders how we ever survived in the "old days." Wait till next year. Meanwhile, read the sticky about scuplties at the top of this forum.
