Just out of curiosity, what is the goal of having an auction, as opposed to simply releasing the land to public? Obviously the Lindens don't need the money. Is it just for the sake of having an event?

Jake - The main idea behind the auction is that it allows the person or group who wants it most to get it. It also allows time for people to get together and think about what they might do with it. The alternative is to leave it to chance, so who is online when we release it, grabs it.

Thanks for the reply, Haney. My only reservation about auctions is that only the very rich can take advantage of them. I realize that a more egalitarian solution would be harder to implement, though.

The bid is in there - I'd say you already got your elephant. Don't mind the monkeys. ;)

I cant believe you people didnt start bidding at 71000. Anyone who bids less than that will make a little money.

You said it yourself Eggy. It's pure profit, it'd be stupid not to bid. :)

Eggs, one can never own too much land!

People buy land because they have future projects in mind for the area and start collecting bits and pieces with an eye to having enuff to work with. Sometime the project doesn't come to fruition and you move on to the next project. And what a great opportunity to get a large area.

This is a capitalistic society after all.

Well yeah pit but Rathe is the #1 land owner already and most of his land has been empty since the dawn of time.
I'm not sure how much land he owns today but someone once did the math and came to the conclusion that the guy owned 3 whole sims worth of land. I dont know what he's planning to do with it or how the heck he manages to pay for all the tax on it. I really dont care either way, I was just kidding :)

The leader boards are broken. Have been broken. I'm guessing will remain broken for a while. I do not believe they accurately reflect my land ownership as the numbers have sporatically jumped up without me purchasing anything. In fact I was out of SL for about 1.5 weeks recently due to computer problems but was able to watch my stats on the website from another computer and the numbers continued to grow and multiply even though I wasn't aquiring anything.

Yes I do "own" a lot of land, but this is my complaint with the leader boards, people make a lot of assumptions based on (broken) figures. Just because I own the land doesn't mean I'm the only one using it. I belong to several groups and projects and over a dozen+ people use the land I own. It's called organized group management.

I also rent out lots of land, which pays for itself in taxes so even though I "own" it it isn't costing me anything but the intial upfront cost. Yes I have land that is empty, but as Pituca stated it's planning, most of the land is in development or on the drawing board for differnt projects, you can only work on so much at one time and it's smart to acquire good pieces of real estate while they're on the market because they don't stay on the market.

An additional reason for keeping some land empty is to accomodate your project. I aim for efficient prim usage, but if you have a large build its going to take a lot of prims and I like to try to reflect my prim usage with land usage to be fair unlike others who buy 10% of the land and use 90% of the prims.

Now that we've gotten way off topic... back to the topic.

$70,000.
