Does anyone have a link to a detailed thread or tutorial on creating your own avatars? Thank you in advance for your help.

Creating them in what way? That can have several very different meanings.
1: Using just the appearance controls to morph the base avatar, or to add better textures like custom skins to the base avatar. There is a huge variety that can be accomplished with just the appearance sliders, but some things are not possible with this alone.
2: Creating and using prim parts and/or scripts to do something impossible with just the base avatar. For example, making a furry avatar, a robot, or a tiny avatar. This invoilves learning how to build and/or script in SL first.
3: Creating a new base avatar with a different body structure (six limbs, real digitigrade legs, etc...) and/or better U/V mapping. This last meaining unfortunately is not possible in SL, though many Players wish it was.
Which do you mean?

I was referring to No 2 on your list. I have reasonable building skills, but only basic scripting ability. What I had in mind was to craft custom avatars which can be loaded onto the base avatar, would have simple movement scripts attached to some parts, and would be able to respond to "outside" scripts such as dances and other animations.

I am just starting to shape and texture prim avatar related clothing, ect. I explored using rotation script for something bit more pscyhodelic on item or to create motion on a thinking helmet. I am still new though so I am curious when does one need scripts for certain avatars? Are tiny avatars a scripted item? Thanks in advance, FD
