No scripting necessary
![]() if you click the more button, it brings up a whole set of menus that allows you to modify a whole bunch of things! this is just a fly by a seat of your pants tutorial! Play with all the options to see what you can do, and of course you can always ask someone, in world, like me ![]() _____________________

yeah rommy the biggest thing with the build tools is play with em -
but if you want a basic overview feel free to ask me. I had a basic walkthrough when i started that really helped. flyk _____________________

my one suggestion
12-08-2002 08:28
it is all about using the least number of parts possible to build the coolest structure, or at least that is my view
![]() For example, you want a framed house, well make a cube primitive, and then change it so that it is long and wide in the x and y plane, and thin in the z. Hollow it out to 95% and rotate it onto its side, then duplicate it by holding shift and moving it, and voila, you have a framed house! Or say you wanted o live in a cylinder with a door and roof. Make a cylinder, then max all its values to 10m, hollow it out to 95%, and then move one of the cut silders. Add something beautiful to the top part of the hole in the side you just made, and now you have a house! _____________________

In the next release (coming soon) there's a very basic intro to building things.
It's not a complete build a house tutorial (that'll probably be coming later), but it covers getting started with creating, modifying and linking primitives. |

Is there a way to put a window in a wall without having to build 4 objects around the location you want a window?
I have a tower. Built with vertical cylinders. I want to place several windows in the tower, but the only way I can figure out to do it is to cut my cylinder then place to small pieces above and below where I want the window to be. I gues that would make it 3 objects, but I would like to just cut a hole in the side of my wall. |

that is the only way at the moment, although, you could have multiple windows if you had two hollow cylinders, one above the other, a certain distance, and then add pieces of other cylinders in between the two cylinders, you could have an indefinate number of windows, well that is not entirely true because it would be dependant on how small a cut of a cylinder gets...or you could put rectalinear pieces as the infill because at that radius, they should still seem to follow the curve, if they are small enough

rectilinear pieces

This would be so nice, but when I tried to do just that for my grab bag thingy last night I found that the hollow circle is, at best, an approximation.
Then I was working with 1/4 circles, maybe it'd be different on say, a 180 |

Hi,
Note that the faceting (polys) you see on things like the interior of cylinders (or any other curved surface) are things we are still tuning - expect to see improvement in both rendering and physics (collision) performance. In the mind of the object, it really is smoothly curved! ![]() |

You could also create a window with an alpha. You can then shift the texture around to place it anywhere you wanted in that panel. You can also get quite creative with window shapes this way.

I discovered a new trick for making a window last night....but it won't work on a cylinder..
You take a cube..doh!! then turn it on its side 90 degree angle. expand it up and expand the sides. Then squish the center ie: a wall built with a cube on its side. Then hollow it to desired window size.. then take another flat wall thinner then the windowed wall, but with the same height and width, and place it within the windowed wall. Now provided you have the clear texture or even smoke will work.. texture the thin solid "wall" that is within the windowed wall. The big advantages are only 2 pieces, and you can resize the window at any time with minimal work, and no extra cost or remodeling. Disadvantages: you are stuck with a window in the center. and so far as i know will only work on flat walls. you can add a few more pieces like cross beams in the center of the open part of the window to dress it up a bit, and not have to add and line up extra window panes. |

I gues that would make it 3 objects, but I would like to just cut a hole in the side of my wall. Because you are charged per item, I really think that texturing is the way to go. If you use the Gimp, which is free http://www.gimp.org and make a texture, with a window in the middle, select the window with the magic wand, right click on the window with the texture and go to "selection" and choose "invert", now right click again, choose "edit" and "copy", now right click again and choose "edit" and "Paste as new" and only the stuff that was selected (wall not window) will be pasted, leaving the spot with the window without texture (alpha) and when you use this new texture (make sure you save it as a tga) it will be a window for you. Poblems: The wall will look like there is no thickness because the inside face of the exterior part of the wall and vise versa, is invisible or non existant. I solved this by making a window frame (only adds one more object and looks pretty good) Remember to play with it, you can make mullions and muttons (spelling? LOL) and when you are copying your picture to paste as new, you just have to select each "hole" in the window (as if you are making many windows) and voila! you have a fancy window. Good luck! Ingie |
