I have a 219 prim build I am making, to be worn as an attachment. When I tried to link the 90 prim part with the rest, I got the above message. Everything is well within 10 meters of each other. I remember once when I was doing jewelry, I got this message when I had too many prims in the object, but I thought 250 odd was the limit for number of prims.
Any ideas about what is happening and how to fix it?

Pretty sure the link limit is 250ish prims - 254 was it? Edit: also, it's size-related. If one prim is teeeeeny compared to the rest, that can mess it up too.

I would suspect prim rot in one of the prims somewhere since this recently happened to me as well. Once the offending prim was replaced all was well with the world again.

Either 254 or 255, haven't tested in a while, but I believe it's 255 (256 integers, one being 0, so 255 would be max, though I could be wrong with linksets) I'd say try taking it in as a coalesced object (Multi-object) then re-rezzing to see if it helps, if not then link various parts together until you get that problem with one specifically, then replace it. Also, if the initial 90 prim is a linkset, maybe try unlinking it, then linking all together starting as individual prims?

If it is prim rot, the easiest fix is to drag copy the linkset and delete the original. The copy (the one left in place) should be OK.

Prim rot? Lord, never heard of that but it sounds horrible. I shall always tap my plywood cubes before sitting on them in the future!
Well, I got it all linked, linking them one at a time, occasionally a few at a time, but usually trying to link more than one gave me the error. Never did find a "rotten" prim, they all seemed equally recalcitrant.
Oddly, when selecting the group to edit, only a handful of the prims get highlighted--though the edit window shows the full prim count and they move together, etc.
The strangest thing is that I cannot select a prim and make it the root prim. It's a pair of carriage horses and harness, and obviously, I want part of the crossbar to be the root (it ended up being part of a horse's tush. Perhaps it is trying to tell me something). Anyway, I unlinked the crossbar, then selected the group followed by the crossbar. "Bleh to you!" says SL. "Arrrrggghhh," say I, adding a "Arrggggh!" for good measure (now then, absent me on voice, you shall imagine that is all I said). BUT, I was fortunately able to link the crossbar back in--just so long as I didn't try to make it the root.
My build is bewitched, and I am bothered and bewildered....

"My build is bewitched, and I am bothered and bewildered...."
This does happen. SL is very moody, and can work fine on another day! I had this ' link failed, pieces too far apart' message on my thatched cottage, when I linked everything but the chimney pot! I provided the chimney pot to my customers and advised a 'topping out ceremony' as we have in the UK when a house has its chimney pot completed. This led to an interesting discussion on barn-raising etc.... Then they IM'd me that they had linked the pot just fine, and I tried it on my copy and Voila! Complete link.
Good luck with the horses, just leave them for 24 hours to settle down! Prim rot indeed...
Bestw wishes from Ainee Kohime

if you have this issue in the future, the solution is very simple. swipe the entire object by draging a box around it. unlink everything with ctrl+shift+L. then click the prim you want to be the root, this will de select it. then click it again to reselect it. as the last prim selected will be the root. then link.

Link Problem
01-09-2008 08:32
Hi there, I had the same problem. I build high prim vehicles and nothing is worse then trying to put it together and it wont link while you know it's not too far apart! I found this happens a lot when trying to link several linked objects together as a whole and the answer is simply to UNLINK the whole thing before linking it together. So select everything you want to link and then ctrl-shift L and then ctrl L
Works for me every time!
Edit: LOL didnt see the last reply before me. SHE'S RIGHT!

I found a solution to this issue that sometimes work:
We have 6 objects: 1 2 3 4 5 6
Link 1 2 3, with 3 as root, let's call it "A".
Link 4 5 6, with 4 as root, let's call it "B".
Link A B (where 3 (from A) is adjacent to 4 (from B)).
