Hey. There's no "landscaping" category, so I figured this was as close as it got. I need to find a Linux application that will allow me to read and modify RAW files. Bailiwick and L3DT don't seem to work in Wine, and the GIMP doesn't recognize the format. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

It might be worth asking in Textures.

Also, you might be able to find a converter that will change the raw file to and from something that GIMP will use. raw <=> psd for example.

I'm not really a GIMP user, so I could be way off on this, but a quick Google search led me to two plugins. If I'm understanding the descriptions properly, UFRaw should allow you to import a pre-existing RAW file to work on it in GIMP, and RAWTex should enable you to export a working image in RAW format. I wasn't able to find a plugin described as being able to handle both import and export, which seems a little weird. But hopefully the two together will do what you need.

Again, I must stress I'm not an active GIMP user, and I've never actually used these plugins, so for all I know they might be completely wrong. I'm sure a lot of people would appreciate it if you give them a try and report back whether or not they work.

You can find them at http://gimp.foebud.org/faceted_search/results/raw

Unfortunately, those plugins are meant o convert a different sort of .raw file apparently, being the raw data from digital cameras. At least, as far as I can tell.

It's been a long 24 hours.

I have done some raw file terrains and looked at the programs you listed above and for myself decided I didnt need them.

I am assuming you either do not have photoshop or perhaps there is some problem running it on your linux system.

But Photoshop is the program that would do the trick. However you could work around it.
Since the guts of it will be a greyscale map then you could go ahead and make your map in
Gimp and Email it to someone you know who Does have PS and give them instructions on how to convert and save it.

That is definitely a temporary solution if you plan to handle these files often then you may want to consider a different configuration on your computer if that is what is preventing you from using photoshop.

And if this is your first one "a little goes a long way" in height variance that is, your max height and max depth are very close in greyscale tint unless your going for something very extreme. :)

P.S.

Those other programs you mentioned from what I could tell when I looked at them mostly
are capable of the file conversions and a form of visualization of your efforts.
Personally I use Bryce which is a terrain generator that also has a terrain editor that accepts greyscale maps. That works pretty good for 3d visualization and I believe that
daz still has a version that is if not free very low cost.
