Linking house and furniture

I have been searching for answers to what seems like a simple question, but no luck. Maybe I just don't know how to *ask* it.

I have a house, and some furniture. Should I Link them, so if the house moves, so does the furniture?

Should the furniture be Physical, so it sits on the floor?

Should it be locked? Will that prevent it moving if ppl bump into it?

Inquiring minds probly already know, but I'd like to know, too.

never link furniture to a house unless you plan on that furniture being in the same spot forever

i learned that lesson a long time ago when i linked a dining room set together and then wanted to move a chair and had to unlink each lil prim of that chair and relink them it was a huge mess

furniture doesnt move if people bump into it

not sure on the physical thing i dont think ive ever used that

I would recommend locking the house itself. When trying to pick up an item from the floor of my skyPOD I accidently picked up the pod instead. Locking will help prevent this sort of problem.

Hi Lee and welcome,
I also wouldn't reccommend linking the furniture to the house, you would probably regret that later. If you need to move the house, there is a way to move everything together. Get your avie above the house or somewhere where you can see the entire house in your screen, preferably from the top. Go up to Tools and make sure "Select only my objects" is checked. Click on any prim and go into Edit mode. Left click way off to one side and "drag" and you'll see a yellow transparent box come up. Keep dragging so that the yellow box surrounds the house entirely. You can then move the house and everything inside it together. Just make sure you have that yellow box around all of it. If you have problems please IM me, I'm glad to come show you. Good luck :)

Wow.. thanks. This is going to save me an incrediable amount of work. I kept picking up everything in the house and moving.. and putting everything back out.

First off welcome, now to address this question :)

Never make anything physical if you don't have to. Furnature should not be physical unless there is a property that you must have. Physics is mainly for scripted objects of some sort, and will lag a sim if enough stuff is physical. Again, you don't want to make furnature physical normally, unless your putting in some kind of script that calls for physicality :)

If you're worried that you can't position your chairs accurately enough, just hover them over where you THINK they should be, turn on physical and deselect them so they rest on the floor normally, and then edit and disable physics on them again. Voila - your chairs should be positioned more or less right, providing no weird physics occured causing them to topple over or launch into orbit. ;)

It gets more complicated if you have a Timeless type of scripted door which relies on the house root prim being in a particular place. The last selected prim normally becomes the root prim (when selected, root prim (s) are outlined by yellow frames, all other frames by blue frames).

I usually group stuff and link them together so that they can be managed as one entity, usually not involving the house itself. That way you can move them as a group or replace them all at once.

I have an Irish neighbour in Euttum who accidentally "took" his house and his furniture has been hanging in mid air for the last couple of months. Strange to see a double bed in midair complete with poseballs.

I position my house on even numbered xyz coords so if it does disappear for any reason at all it can be put back exactly in the right space so as not to have to readjust the furniture.

Linking your house to your furniture might also affect the behavior of all the poseballs in your house and attempting to sit anywhere in your house might shoot you into whichever poseball was positioned last.

I can't emphasise enough how important 'lock' has been to me. I didn't really use it with my last house, and when my keyboard wasn't being very responsive, countless times I'd think I was about to rotate my camera with ctrl+alt+click and instead drag the floor off into the distance. The fact that you can move objects without being in edit mode is a real pain.

It's a bit of a fuss in that you have to unlock things before you change anything with them, but I'd much rather that than accidentally deleting something or moving my wall into my neighbour's living room... (If you try, or accidentally try to delete a locked object it will warn you first and not just vanish forever!)

My house is linked together (minus the scripted doors) and locked in place. My bed is linked as 2 pieces (solid bed and phantom curtains) and locked down. My floor cushions are all linked as one piece, because they're pretty much one prim each, and, can you guess what else? And all the poseballs are one linked set (which hasn't caused me any sit target problems) and, yes, you got it, locked!
