As with my recent car model I have been working on (Lexus 2049), I have been doing a lot of searching through my collection of concept car images. I am already a future car freak, and have been to many car shows with current concepts being displayed. So I have seen my collection of new designs and eye candy that never hits production. But what is stoping us from producing these ideas in SL? ;)

I was thinking about making a group (team) of people devoted to spending their time in SL working on different Car or Transportation Models in SL. Cars mostly, but as cars are not possible to be scripted into SL as of yet, we can still work on a Train System. As Xav as already been working on his Hele it is very possible to move objs in a straight line. So the possibility of making a train or hover rail system is very possible in SL. Now this project is still just a thought, nothing will be created if I don't get anyone to help this go thur mind you.

So is there anyone in here, with experiece in modelling in SL, that would like to join this team?

Hey Jason, the idea of a train sounds intriguing to me...like a futuristic meg-lev system, maybe? Of course, the biggest problem is purchasing long stretches of land in a straight line...do you have any idea of where you want to build a line? Imagine a train running from Lusk to the Outlands...it'd be cool, wouldn't it? :)

If we can get some Linden support on this, I'd love to join in on a project like this...even if they're not, maybe we could build an experimental line anyway to how it'll work...

Look for me in world tonight if you can...

If we ever did something like that, then yes I say we should contact one of the Linden folks. Mind you I did see one of them working on some sort of rollercoster pathway design somewhere in SL a day or 2 ago. hmmmm...

But I was more leaning of this idea for one of the CyberPunk ppl to take a glimpse at that and try and incorperated it in their design. Still got my fingers crossed.

Plus I would love to make one, on some flat straight land. Even if it only goes like 30 meters. Hehe :D

(this was also posted in the chosen themed communities thread)

From: someone

For any of you who have visited Primm Valley (formerly Stateline), Nevada, you know about this, and those who haven't, I'm going to explain :-)

There are 3 casinos in Stateline, Whiskey Pete's, the Primadonna, and Buffalo Bill's. They are on both sides of the interstate, and all owned by the same company, so they made a small-gauge train that runs a loop between the three. Each station is themed according to the hotel's theme, although the train looked like it is out of Buffalo Bill's theme (Gold Rush 1800's).

Anyhow it allows people to get to all three casinos without having to walk or move their car. And it's free.

I think this is what Kerstin is getting at, and I think it would be awesome. It would be cool for crossing sims also (I will also crosspost to Jason's thread).

Jason -- I would be very interested in helping with this. I would much rather take a train (free or very cheap) than to have to fly across sims. I usually get horribly lagged while flying long distances, and I tend to run into things.

However, I'd be interested in helping do some test runs of a system. I think with some hover scripts we might even be able to make a mag-lev style train.

very cool

this sounds very cool, I just started SL but i would like to be a part of this project, one idea that may work is if instead of buying all that land, why not just buy land for the stops, then have the train fly lines between stops. That way you don't have to buy so much land, and the train can run further tracks. I'll look for you in-world. :D

There is only one problem about this, how if someone moves a house in the path of the trian. Bag Error.

I have been doing a lot of thinking about this and what I suggest we do is the following.

Setup Hovertrain booth, that teleport you to a position in the sky where a hover stop is located. This will be more like how the transit system was setup in the movie "Back to the Future 2" witht the cars.

The train will hover in the sky on their own system. They will be high enough where no buildings (that of my collection) will be built. And the good thing about this is that the FPS rate should be fast enough so that every user has a smooth ride on the Hovertrain.

When a user gets off the trian it is as simple as walking into a out booth at the floting station and be transfered back down to land. Therefor minizing the cost of land needed, and bug to occur later on.

hmm...

Is there a limit on height in SL? or could there be a limit on building height, but have a gap before the world height ends, this would help in projects like this. Also then noby could build a wall that blocks out part of sims or buildings, etc... Maybe talk to a linden about it. what you said sounds like a good idea. Maybe build a platform that raises up to the train when clicked. there would need to be more than one, and that would bring the cost up more, and with all the cost, i doubt it could be made free.

Just an idea but what if u built underground? Esentially dig a trench, then go above ground to go over houses? Then just build soil/grass textured boards over trench. Also, maybe you'd like to have a car expo or something? Last thing, sorta relevant. Would it be possible in the outlands to have an old fashioned looking train go around edges, then we can have events were some players had to guard a safe, or mail, while robbers got to raid the train? Or maybe make the old west town a damage area, and have a little game of being the sherrif. People could dress up and use weapons styled for the time. I dont know *shrug*, just kinda brainstorming here. I would like to see your cars on display, then u could do a rotating section, add remove cars or something. Anyway, just my two cents.

Many of those idea are great. Mind you I really not like old fashon things. I am more of a Future type of guy. But the idea are great.

Currently I just finished the outside of the 5th element car, and I do plan do have a car show or something like that soon at my building.

Thanks for the idea, I will be doing that now.

I will also be looking the net for hover train or just simple present bullet train designs to see what type of models are we going to implement this design with.

Some Example so far:
  1. http://www.thehollandsentinel.net/feature/focus99/images/022499/fut_cars.jpg
  2. http://media.abcnews.com/media/Tech/images/ap_maglev990624_h.jpg

Now this is "just" a thought, how about we do that idea that has been in development for many years now in the US and Canada. Instead of having a train for the transportation we implement a car system. In other words you will have small little car, like small units traveling on the same rail system, and some of these can split on the track to go somewhere else and go another way. More avance mind you, but I like a challenge.

my 3 cents

looks cool, but the rail may not work. The cost of a rail across mutiple sims  i think it would stay and be used more if it were a cheap system. I think a hover car would work, then have buttons in the car for common areas to go to. This should be an interesting project, while i was wandering around, i found what looks like a track at Freelon 56, 212, may want to keep an eye on that

Hey Everyone! After reading this post, I got a team together and we have started a traditional monorail. The test track is currently in Minna. See my post called "SLTS - Second Life Transit System" for more info!
