Z position changes

Sometimes when I create an object AT ground level, then take it into inventory, everytime thereafter when I rez it - it rezzes up in the air. It may range from less than a meter to 10 or 12 meters off the ground. No amount of unlinking, relinking, changing the parent prim or repositioning will change the new elevated Z. This is particularly annoying and prevalent in large builds such as homes and a major inconvenience to customers who buy products that rez meters off the ground.

Has anyone else seen this problem and does anyone have a fix?

Objects from inventory will rez wherever the sytem thinks your mouse is when you let go of the button. Where an object was before you took it into inventory is completely irrelevant. It's all in where you drag the mouse to. The problem is that the mouse only moves in 2 dimensions on the screen while SL is a 3-dimensional world. Therefore the system really has no way of determining where in space you want something to go until you tell it specifically, and the mouse by itself simply can't do that. Where your mouse looks like it is and where it actually is can be quite different. All you can do is drag things from inventory into the world arbitrarily and then, after they rez, move them where they're supposed to be.

Hi Chosen,

I am accustomed to the challenges of trying to rez items at precise locations within SL. I think this is a little different - on these select objects that rez high - - they rez at the same height above any given floor I am standing on or above the ground if I am at ground level. It has nothing to do with how carefully I try to position my mouse prior to releasing the item. Rather at some point in the build process - this link set seemingly "chooses" a very high rez point. This rarely happens, but when it does - it never seems to be fixable and it's duplicated by anyone that rezzes the object.

Thanks for the clarification.

Hmm, weird. I'm not sure what to tell you. It doesn't sound like anything I've ever encountered. Sory I can't be of more help.

Only thing I can think of similar to this works this way . . . Say you cut a cylinder in half and put it on the ground, cut side down. Its bounding box is still the same size, even though you only see half a cylinder. Half that bounding box is underground. So when you take the cylinder and re-rez it from inventory, SL wants the whole bounding box out of the ground, and the cut half of the cylinder appears floating above the ground. I run into this placement problem all the time with objects that include cut prims resting on the ground.

I'm pretty sure Kim is right. Objects with huge cut and dimpled spheres or abused torii are especially bad at this.

It is a really odd thing - have seen it with one piece of furniture and several houses. Unfortunately - no cut cylinders - just the typical hollowed cubes to create a windowed wall. I am truly stumped.
