Newbie question here, and I'm hoping a simple one.
I am trying to apply a texture to one side of a small cube. The original is 512x512.
Once applied to the prim, I find that I am unable to make the box smaller. Using "stretch" only show some large diagonal lines whose purpose I don't understand. I am not working with something really tiny - proportionally about the size of my AV's hand.
So I create a new box, resize it first and THEN apply the texture. Now the texture is of course bigger than the prim's side. I use the sizing options in the edit menu to make the texture smaller. As soon as I hit "apply", the texture pops back to its original size.
Or it suddently starts to tile really tiny on the prim. I change the repetitions back to ONE, hit apply and the texture pops back to its huge size.
What am I missing here? Should I make the texture smaller to begin with? It's a very simple design. But why won't the edit menu keep the settings I assign to it? (i.e. size and repetitions).
Or is this just SL being SL?

strange problem ...really ...
1. did u make that cube(object) coz if u using smt maybe it looks like cube but its cuttet thing...ant that may be problem.. 2. do u using any script inside that object ?
u dont need to make diff size of your texture ..thats not problem for sure..
maybe its some temporary LL problem in moment when u try to do that ...but i hear for that problem first time .
check your mapping in texture tab ...set it to default and enable strech texture ..
then make repeats PER FACE H-1 V-1 u dont need to click apply ...its for repeats per meters...
maybe this will not solve your problem, but try everything ..and write here what u do and did u solve problem ... cheers

sounds like you inadvertently set the mapping to planar on the texture tab

From: Brann Georgia So I create a new box, resize it first and THEN apply the texture. Now the texture is of course bigger than the prim's side. I use the sizing options in the edit menu to make the texture smaller. As soon as I hit "apply", the texture pops back to its original size.
I don't have SL in front of me, so I'm going from memory. There are two ways you can set the number of repeats, one is by the number of repeats per face (horizontal and vertical), the other is by the number of repeats per meter. In the first case, all you have to do is either type in the number, or use the up/down arrows to change it. And it sounds like this is what you are doing...typing "1" into the horizontal and vertical boxes. At this point, it probably looks right. But then when you hit "apply", it goes wrong. The "apply" button is for the second method--the number of repeats per meter. Changing the value in that box has no affect until you click apply. When you do, it updates the horizontal and vertical repeats boxes, and the texture is changed according to that. The short answer is...don't hit apply. The longer answer is both methods have their uses. In some cases, it is easier to control the number of repeats directly. In other cases, it is easier to know "how big" a texture should be. If, for example, you have a section of wall made of a number of differently sized prims, but you want the texture (e.g., brick) to be scaled the same, it is easy to do with the second method.

From: Brann Georgia The original is 512x512.
-------8<--------
I am not working with something really tiny - proportionally about the size of my AV's hand. I'd consider scaling the texture down too. Say on a 1024 x 768 display, you'd need two thirds of the screen height filled with this box to see the full 512 pixels. I'd consider 256 x 256 a high resolution texture for something of this size, and 128 x 128 may be plenty.

From: Straif Ash The short answer is...don't hit apply.
Well, that was pretty much the problem Thanks, all
