Is it possible to export a model from the grid so I can edit it offline?

Unfortunately not. People have attempted tools to allow us to import stuff from various environments though.

# I recall Jeffrey Gomez making an offline building system for Blender last year. It included an LSL script to import the builds into Second Life. I'm not sure if it's still supported.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=149111

# There is also an offline builder for Maya with limited prim support:

** If you're happy to build with basic prims in-world while utilizing sculpties for more unique shapes, you could do worse than check the Sculpted Prims Wiki.

Every single object in SL is stored as a series of floats, integers, keys, vectors and rotations. This how is the various programs import prims into SL. All of that info is either pasted into a notecard or is brought in through xml-rpc or http messages. You would have to do the reverse of that, gather all of the data and then transmit it to the outside. Then you would need to know how to get a 3rd party application to read that data and rebuild whatever. No one has offered a program like that yet.

There is another way to do it and it is available now but I would be lynched if I mentioned it here. Not worth the hassle and no matter what, you can still edit anything here much faster then exporting/editting and importing again.
